Had a right hip replacement 9 weeks ago. Was taking paracetomol and codeine until 4 weeks ago also had to self inject anti blood clotting medication every day for four weeks. Only taking the odd paracetomol now. Had spinal sedation for op. In the last four weeks I have developed dull stomach pain and GI symtoms it's as if the lining of my stomach is iratated. GP has done range of tests all normal, I have never had stomach problems. Has anyone had this after their operation? GP prescribed omoprozole this week. Off crutches etc so the operation was successful.

    Hello @Norny

I had a spinal sedation for a different procedure, I'm still taking paracetamol and codeine. I've always had stomach issues so the issues are not related for myself.

This is from the website www.medicines.org.uk (pharmacy's use this to print information sheets for patients). Omeprazole is commonly prescribed for stomach acid issues.

What Omeprazole is and what it is used for

Omeprazole contains the active substance omeprazole. It belongs to a group of medicines called ‘proton pump inhibitors’. They work by reducing the amount of acid that your stomach produces.

Hopefully someone who has had a hip replacement op can back to you soon.

    Hi @Norny

I had my THR in May with an Epidural and also have Asthma, Bronchiecstas, Diverticulitis sand a Hiatus Hernia. As part of all these, I was prescribed Omeprazole about 2 1/2 years ago for reflux which caused increased coughing.to the extent I needed to vomit.

The Diverticulis made me suffer stomach cramps and increased motions which could be frequent and extremely loose.

When I came out of hospital, they had changed my meds from Tramadol, Buprenorphine patches for my pre op pain to Paracetamol and Codeine plus the blood thinner injections for 28 days. I still took my Asthma meds plus the Omeprazole.

I'm not sure which of the circumstances caused me to have even worse stomach cramps and to put it politely, not travelling far from the toilet for over a week.

Moving on to September, my surgery decided to try changing my PPI (Omeprazole) to Lansoprazole. This led to a repeat of the issue I had when I came out of hospital but 10 times worse in that this happened immediately after everything I ate and drunk.

I looked up the side effects of taking PPI's and noted the cramping with the toilet issues and also hair loss (which has been an issue since starting PPI's but didn't connect and put down to the cocktail of meds I took for my OA pain).

I was also, at the time, taken on Dr's orders to A & E for a suspected severe UTI and diagnosed with Kidney Stones.

I stopped the Lansoprazole immediately and 'things' improved. My surgery later prescribed Gaviscon liquid which seems to have eased the Diverticulitis issues and also eased the heartburn and issues relating to the Hernia which caused the coughing and sickness after meals.

Are all these connected together? I'm not sure. Do I feel better after stopping the PPI's? Yes. My hair loss although is still happening, is not as bad as it was but the body may take time to realise the PPi''s are not being taken anymore.

I always read my patient information leaflet when prescribed new meds, force of habit since being made critically ill thorugh a lethal combination of GP prescribed drugs when I was 18, 50 years ago but, never connected what was happening to my meds, probably because they all happened individually and also the cocktail of meds I was on at the time.

This might not help you at all but I would check those patient information leaflets again, just to see if the puzzle pieces fit for you.

    Love n hugs

    Trish

  • Probably you have your stomach irritated (gastritis). With all the stuff you've had to digest the gut microbiome is probably unbalanced. I don't think taking Omeprazole and create more unbalance is a good idea. I had to give up some painkiller tablets during my THR recovery just to avoid the Omeprazole because it was making me feel sick and my stomach was in pain. I know some countries have started banning proton pump inhibitors because of the serious secondary effects and that's not a good signal. I tried a more natural approach eating fermented food and whole food to balance my gut microbiome.

    Take care x

@Nurina @Trish9556 I think all the meds after the THR has caused my stomach lining to become inflamed. Not sure omoprozole is impoving things actually making me feel worse, having to run to loo which was not a problem before might just change diet and avoid processed food etc and eat fermented foods to see if if settles down. Thanks for responding x
