Metaject pens

Hi everyone, I was taking the tablet form of methotrexate but due to really bad sickness, I switched to the pens. Can't say it makes me feel any better really but hey ho!

The problem I'm having is when I inject, the needle is so sharp (wasn't in the beginning) and really hurts! I don't like needles of any description anyway so not good. I have mentioned it to a nurse in rheumatology clinic but she said maybe I'm pressing down too hard when injecting or maybe the chemist has changed the pens? All I know is, I don't think I want to do this anymore 😭

Hi @TrudyD Sorry to hear how you're feeling.

I take methotrexate in tablet form and haven't had any issues with sickness so can't really advise on injections. However, I would say that you should have a further discussion with the rheumatology nurse and maybe get her to check out your injection technique. Have you checked with the chemist whether they have changed the pens? I also wonder, if you don't think the pens are making any difference, should you discuss with them going back onto the tablets?

Please don't feel alone in this - you may have to persevere but you should get some help from the professionals.

In the meantime other members of our group may be able to advise.

    Keep us informed.

I can't say it hurt me put it stung for a while. But after a while the side affects were so bad I stopped taking the injections after 7 years I'm now starting a new drug called adimumab which is a biological drug I'm so scared I'm struggling but I need something because I've got no quality of life

Hope you sort out your problem with metro.

Hi, I take the pen and don't find it painful. Where are you injecting? I find the upper thigh area better than the stomach. That was a little more sensitive, I found. Have you tried varying the injection site?

I’ve been taking the injection of methotrexate each week for the last 4 weeks. I was told to alternate the injection site each week. I always inject in my thigh upper leg area, I don’t do my tummy as I feel happier seeing what I’m doing. I had a bruise come up last week after I did mine and it stung a bit but only briefly. I think I pressed down too hard on my leg. I get side effects of headaches and feels like a yucky feeling in my head each evening after taking it, which eventually subside after a few days. It does make you feel alone but honestly you are not. I just hope mine kicks in soon and helps my symptoms. Fingers crossed 🤞 for all of us… ❤️

I've been using the Metoject pens for several months now with no problems, although I find when I inject into my thighs I get a stinging sensation for 5 or 10 minutes afterwards, and sometimes a small bruise, whereas when I inject into my abdomen there is no pain, no stinging, no bruising, nothing. We are all different!

But if you are suffering severe sickness perhaps you should ask if reducing the amount of Methotrexate would be OK? My MTX was increased from 15ml to 20 ml and that's when I started getting nausea but there was no improvement in my condition. They increased the amount to 25ml and boy did I feel sick. Very, very sick. For the entire week 'til time for the next injection! I was not prepared to put up with that and I am now back to 15ml with no side effects other than feeling "below par" the following day. Definitely worth discussing with your rheumatoid nurse, make sure she (or he!) knows exactly how you feel. There are always options. Good luck.

@Cara123 I inject in my upper thighs too, I alternate each week. In the beginning it was fine but just lately it's been really painful. Think I will get in touch with my rheumatoid clinic as I'm struggling abit x

Hi there. Is it definitely an metoject skinny pen? . Once I was sent a different type that was much fatter to hold (can’t remember the name) and the needle was horrible and I really felt it. I had to ask my dr to make sure my prescription read Metoject and not just methotrexate pre-filled injection. I also take mine at night, that way I sleep through the symptoms.
