Hi, newbie, Apixaban post hip surgery and joint pain
Hi all, newbie Wizza here. I had hip replacement on 17th October 2024 and was rehabbing very well up until week 3 when I developed a very painful swollen foot on operated leg . Couldn’t place foot down , swollen around instep and ankle both sides , then into my big toe /ball of foot where I have a broken sesamoid bone. I eventually got referred to A&E (useless local GP service..) and checked for DVT/clots , thankfully all clear. 10 days and I’m still in pain with swollen foot and have now got painful thumb/wrist joint so I can’t use crutches.. the only thing I can think of is the Apixaban that I’m taking is causing a reaction. I was rehabbing so well . I’m meant to take it until 25th November but I’ve stopped today as I’m in a loop of doom lurching from a painful swollen foot , big toe then right thumb/wrist joint and I can feel my left thumb beginning to ache.
I have trawled the internet and note many instances of Apixaban triggering arthritis symptoms. I’m taking 10mg Rosuvastatin in evenings, pantaprazole and half a 1.25mg ramipril tablet in mornings. Not had any issues prior to this. Hospital checked bloods , D Fimer test all good for clots , uric acid normal, xray and ultrasound all clear. Was told it was probably something settling down post surgery .. that was last Thursday , still swollen and now my wrist is extremely painful 🤦🏼
Any other experiences with Apixaban or am I barking up the wrong tree .. grateful for any experiences you may wish to share . I have emailed my hip consultant and waiting for a medical response.

Hello @Wizza1 welcome to the forum.
I wonder if it would be a good idea to speak to the pharmacist at the chemist where you got your medications from? That's something you could do today whilst waiting for a reply from your email. I would just give the pharmacy a ring. If you got your med's from the hospital perhaps give your local chemist a ring. They are used to receiving this type of enquiry.
Best Joanne

Thanks Joanne, fortunately I received a reply this morning, he agreed to me stopping Apixaban 🙌🏻. I didn’t take any yesterday, slight improvement today but that might just natural progress… Still swollen, painful both sides of the ankle joint and big toe (top tendon , ball of foot and side) . My wrist pain has moved from the inside of wrist thumb to the pinky finger and top of my right hand , but slightly less acute .
