Pain

Hi everyone!

I was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis in both hips in August this year. I have a consultation for surgery in a couple of weeks , not sure what they will recommend as I am only 38.

To manage so far I am taking pain killers tramadol and naproxen everyday. This dies help however the pain is getting progressively worse now that the weather has changed.

I have tried various other supplements, sleeping gummies, cbd oil, apple cider vinegar, accupuncture and massage.

Some of which do seem to help.

However, since the weather has changed I am really struggling with sleep. I manage to stay asleep for a few hours then wake every 20 minutes or so throughout the rest of the night with a searing pain in both hips. I have a special mattress and pillows for my legs too.

Running out of ideas as to what else I can try. There are so many sleeping aids out there but not sure what is best for my situation and that I can take with my painkillers too.

Does anyone else have the same issue or have had but found something that works?

Anything else I could try or recommendations would be great.

Thank you all ❤️

Naproxen didn't work for me and it only gave me stomach cramps. I've suffered from OA from forever and it's been severe for around 10 years. The only things that worked for me (it's just my experience, not a magic formula) were strengthening exercises to keep my bones in place, stretching to keep flexible ligaments, maintaining a low weight and a eating low carb diet. Sugar is poisonous for me. If I eat sugar, a flare up is guaranteed.

  • Hi Nurina,

    Thank you for messaging!

Ah ok. I had Naproxen for a previous injury and find it does help me. I did try and do exercises and stretches (used to do pilates and yoga before) after I was diagnosed but unfortunately I can barely walk without pain. I found the stretching very difficult as I cannot open up at the hips at all. Sadly very minimal movement with slot of pain.

They believe that I ended up with arthritis because of cam deformities(which have been wearing away at the cartlidge over time) that they think I had from birth, which then caused hip impingements, which led to the osteoarthritis.

Extremely frustrating the only exercises I can manage are in the Hydrotherapy pool.

Do you struggle with sleeping at all?

I seem to have spent a lifetime of curling the duvet round to make sure there are no gaps and I can keep warm, which incidentally is a painful thing to do with your legs if you have arthritis, until . . .

My Mrs bought a fluffy duvet cover with strands on it like a deep pile carpet. We throw that over us and it feels a bit weird, but the pile seals out any gaps all by itself, making it much less drafty straight away, and warms up reasonably fast. I found the way it seals out the drafts was a surprise but being warmer under the duvet, with no messing about, just adds that extra bit of comfort for a good sleep.
