Inflating car tyres

Just wondered what the done thing is when you get to the point where you're no longer able to inflate your car tyres. Will people at the petrol station help or do you go to a garage, and how much do they charge. I had the embarrassment today of not being able to grip the wand hard enough to hold it on the valve and ended up deflating my tyre rather than pumping it up. I was nearly in tears through embarrassment and at a loss of what to do. What do others do?

Oh gosh @JC1978 that must have been awful for you. I had a slow puncture or something a bit back, but I got my brother to pump it up for me twice until I could get it fixed properly. You know maybe it's worth ringing round local garages or even companies like Halfords/your local ATS to see who might have a service to help you?

    My best wishes

    Ellen.

  • I would ask someone in the garage who looks fit and healthy (staff or customer) to help you. Most people are kind and will help providing they’re not rushing to an appointment or something, in which case ask someone else!

  • I get my tyres checked at the garage that does all the maintenance on my car but I've also been caught out at an unfamiliar garage and just asked someone to help, so far no one has said no! I've never been charged for it.

I can't open some containers so when I'm in the shop car park I ask someone to do it for me, I think people like to be asked to help.

I ve found a place near to me who specialise in tyres. They offer free checks. I do buy all my tyres from them now and recomend them. So its good for business. I ask them to check every couple of months. There is bound to be somewhere who wont mind doing it for you.

I have a lovely local tyre place who will do it for me, try to cultivate a relationship with a tyre place, maybe an independent, ask them to inflate and how much they may well not charge.
