The effect of ankle surgery on mobility

Hello, I have severe osteoarthritis in my left ankle, but can still walk 3 - 5 miles cross country and, more importantly, can cycle. I use my bicycle for getting around locally at home, and abroad in India. I have been given the option of bone fusion or ankle replacement, but I am worried about how either of these, particularly bone fusion, would affect my ability to cycle. Does anyone have any experience of these two operations, and their effect on ability to cycle? I would also like to know how they would affect my ability to walk in the countryside.

Welcome @Mitch57 to the online community

You have severe OA in your ankle and are seeking advice form our members about their experiences of the two surgical options that you have been offered. Bone fusion or ankle replacement. One of your concerns is the likely impact on your walking and cycling activities.

Meanwhile I attach a link which you might find helpful

https://www.bofas.org.uk/Patientinformation/FAQs This is the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society

You also might ask your GP for a referral to a physiotherapist who maybe be able to answer your questions.

Since we are all encouraged to be as fit as possible before surgery, you may like to look at the exercises for feet and ankles.

Do let us know how you get on.

Sorry I have no experience of this but my bil had both fused. The pain has gone for him completely.

He however is not a cyclist.

I love my bike and would really miss it if I couldn't cycle. Imagining it, it feels like actually pedalling would be ok but if fused maybe putting toes down to dismount might be different....?

You know I think you'd adjust whatever happens because that's what we seem to do.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on

Thanks Toni. That's a good point about getting off the bike.
