Feeling my new hip moving

hi.. I’m 4 weeks post hip replacement and am walking around the house unaided and using a stick outside. I wonder if anyone else at around this stage has been aware of their new hip working ? I notice it when getting up from sitting, going upstairs and generally just putting weight on it. When walking if I place my palm over the hip I can feel the mechanism moving and wonder if this is normal. It doesn’t hurt but is a strange sensation.

    Hi @GeorgetheDog

I'm glad to hear you are recovering well from your surgery. I don't have too much knowledge on this topic so I'm going to leave it for someone else to help and advise you. Maybe someone who has been through this operation can help more than I would be able to!

    All the best, Claudia x

  • I had a hip replacement just over 10 weeks ago but I haven't noticed it moving although I suppose the joint must move or we wouldn't be able to walk! Maybe check it out with the hospital/surgeon.

@GeorgetheDog Hi and good to hear you've had your hip replacement and you're starting to get about.

I had my hip replacement in December 2023 and was without a stick in the house and one outside at the same stage as you. I can't say I can remember the feeling you have, although maybe I did feel that at the time? I would suggest you talk to your surgeon/physio to check everything is well, although as you've no pain or discomfort that sounds likely.

I guess we're all different as we went into surgery with our individual aches, pains and lack of movement so we will recover differently, albeit we usually all reach the same place in the end.

Hoping you get reassurance and continue to make good progress, take care.
