Knee replacement

Newbie here,

I will be having a Left knee replacement soon, going for my appointment with Orthopaedic consultant and pre op too next month. I will be getting my operation within the next 3 months. I have osteoarthritis in both knees, for the last seven years. Started with a bakers cyst on my right knee. I am still working as a nurse. Really struggling now. I saw various physiotherapists over the years, certain exercises made my legs worse. I was told I was too young for a knee replacement. Had to fight to see orthopaedic doctor and go on a waiting list (NHS) I'm looking for tips for pre op and post up please?

I had a TNR of the left knee two years ago. I did exactly and to the letter everything my consultant told me to do, and all what the physio told me what to do as well!

You have to! Otherwise you will be slow in getting back to normal. That’s the key to it all. The first 2 weeks are uncomfortable but then you will see a massive shift as long as you do the exercise etc you are given. Good luck with your op and keep us informed please.

    Richie.

Thanks, I will do everything that I'm told to do. So I can get better mobility back. I will probably end up getting my right knee done too eventually. Onwards and upwards.

Hi Lorn, first of all how old are you? Let me tell you this I have had 2 knee replacements, 2 hip replacements and my left Ankle replaced!! Also my neck decompressed at 2 levels. I am 68 years old. Yes I am the bionic woman in real life lol you will be fine! I’m not going to lie it is painful but you will get through it! Just do as they say and do your exercises as they are very important. I walk my dogs everyday go on holiday with the girls go dancing and even went on the back of my cousins motor bike to Sherburn. So don’t let Arthritis win! You are the survivor!!

I should be going for a pre-op in the next few months. Just wondering what was checked at your pre-op, what procedures they did.

Good to hear that you have been offered a partial knee replacement. They still seem to be very rare in many parts of the UK.

I will start again. My pre op went ok, apart from high blood pressure. My operation will be in

They done bloods, height, weight, ecg & mess screen. I saw a practitioner nurse who listened to my heart & lungs & all the pre op questions. They gave me antibacterial soap to use pre op, night before op. I saw occupational therapist & pharmacy technician. A one stop shop. The surgeon consented me for a partial or total knee replacement, he explained everything to me. I am a nurse in the nhs in Glasgow with over 40 years experience, I am fully aware of all the process. Totally different to being on the other side. All staff were very nice & efficient. I will be having my operation in 2 to 3 months.Good luck. I made a much up of my last post, technology 😂😊

Thanks for your reply. Good luck with your operation. Were they fussed about your high blood pressure? I have white coat high blood pressure, and do have a home monitor so will check that it is still normal away from white coats!

I also have an irregular heart beat at times. I did see my GP about it about 4 years ago, but of course when they checked it wasn't playing up. I noticed that they do ECGs as part of the pre-op. As I've been waiting over 2 years for my knee replacements (both need doing) I don't want anything to stop it happening so trying to be ahead of the game and get everything sorted before then! I've actually bought a Kardia ecg home monitor so I can record and hopefully determine if it is just benign ectopic beats or some other type of more serious irregularity. My teeth are currently OK - hope they stay that way!

They told me to buy a bp machine. I've to do my bp for the week before surgery, twice a day. Write it down & give it to the nurse on admission. In my experience anaesthetists are usually ok with your bp being high pre op, unless it's extremely high. ( Nurse in same day admission unit ) they are aware patient's are anxious & allow for that. Your quite right ensuring your pulse & bp are under control. You don't want to wait two years, then the op gets cancelled. I've started doing my pre

    exercise s

Exercises. Won't be able to do them 4 times a day, when I'm working. Will be able to do them post op. Good luck, hopefully you won't have too long to wait. L
