Hi, I have a dodgy knee, and it has nearly given way several times. Highly suspect arthritis as my mum was riddled with it. It is also painful at night. Do I need to try for a diagnosis? I kind of want to avoid as hate being old!!

    Hello @tlbirch62

Personally speaking, I would try to get a diagnosis, just so that you know what you're dealing with. I hate being "old", too. But in my case it's a fact! And young people get arthritis too, it's not just confined to older folk. So don't feel bad!! And, of course, it may not be arthritis but something less annoying and more treatable.

Do try to get a diagnosis. i suggest you ask to be seen by a physiotherapist to find out what is up with your knee. It may be that all you need at the moment is physiotherapy to relieve the pain. Given the very long waiting lists for knee replacement under the NHS - years, in many cases - better to know sooner rather than later what stage of arthritis you are at.

Hi @tlbirch62 and welcome to the online community,

I agree with @Bryony and @Eeyore - best to get a diagnosis for your knee problem and then you can make an informed choice about the way forward.

As you have already experienced, members in the community are full of sensible and supportive advice, so please do post any more questions you may have, or let us know how you’re getting on.
