Rheumatoid Arthritis - Hydroxychloroquine & Eyes /Sulfasalazine
Hello everyone, I'm new to this and would be verygrateful for and much appreciate some advice and guidance please.
Just turned 70, diagnosed with RA last October 24 (stiff, painful hands/palms and fingers esp.in the morning on waking, now gone to one wrist tendon). Prior to diagnosis I had a detached retina and had emergency surgery in May 24 (advised it was just "bad luck" but with the research I've since done, am thinking too coincidental to be unrelated). Followed by cataract surgery in same eye March this year.
Have been on hydroxychloroquine 200mg/day for 7 months, after recommended OCT test. Follow up eye appts suggested ongoing inflammation and told to continue Dexamethasone at reduced dose another 6 weeks. Last appt I still feel "fullness and some bluriness". Opthalmology consultant said all looks fine and may be due to lasting effects of surgery as well as RA.
I'm nervous taking Hydroxychloroquine with previous bad press & wondering if this is the catalyst for current vision. Was also encouraged to enquire rheumatology about alternative meds, as OCT not fool proof and if Hydroxychloroquine maculopathy occurs it causes irreversible blindness.
Has anybody had any issues with it? Also any thoughts on Sulfasalizine as I've been given this to start in addition.
Many thanks for any help offered

Morning @Elsa6 and welcome to the online community.
Sorry to hear your concerns about hydroxychloroquine which I have been on for nearly 3 years and been fine but as the doctors/consultants always say everyone is different.
I would keep discussing your options and concerns with the them however.
I have attached following links with information about sulfasalazine ….
I am sure others will connect with you soon.
Best wishes @Naomi33

Thanks so much for responding Naomi.
Your personal findings are much appreciated - as are links for Sulfasalazine.
Just wondering - did you have OCT test prior to starting hydroxychloroquine?
All the best,
Elsa6
