Has anyone gone for a run after total hip replacement?

I have been recommended for a total hip replacement (THR), after a procedure carried out at a Charing Cross Hospital, in inner London failed.

I had a hyaluronic acid injection (Ostenil), and Cortisone injection at the same time into my right hip two years ago, where within one hour of that procedure being carried out I couldn't walk unaided (have to use crutches).

I am worried that I won't be able to go to the gym anymore or go for a run as it is not advised to do these things once you have a THR.

Can someone tell me if they can at least walk unaided after a THR?

Thanks,

Big Steve

    Hi

I had my thr a year ago and walking unaided since about week 3 but that was limited and around the house. One day at a time.

Not sure about running but you should be able to go to the gym as long as you speak to your Dr, physio and the staff at the gym first. . If you just do your own thing that's when things can go wrong.

There are lots of useful posts from people like me who have shared their recoveries so hunt around hip surgery and read a few.

There's also a useful thread in hints and tips with our experiences of what we all found useful. You might have to scroll through a few pages to find it.

The most important thing is to remember re Overy from hip replacement is a marathon, not a sprint.

    Good luck

    Trish

I had my right hip replaced in 2021 and went back to all activities including running. I never had a problem with it. I have just had my left hip replaced (May 17th) and intend to run again. With my first hip, I left it until about 4 months after surgery. I built up slowly and carefully, planning to stop if I ever got pain - which I did not. Safe surfaces, supportive shoes etc. Before I started I made sure I was happy with strength - lots of glute bridges, clam shells, squats etc. I am not sure I would want to put in long distances or heavy workload, but I needed the physical and mental benefit of getting in a 5k twice a week. The x-rays taken prior to my recent operation show the first implant to be in excellent order.
