Hello everyone,
Hope you all had a good Christmas and Happy New Year
My question for today is about nodules. I am prone to cysts, have had a few removed etc but lately my left elbow has been bothering me. For 3wks or more, I have had a lump on the end of my joint on elbow. It's not hard like it's part of bone but it's softish? Hope that makes sense? I put this down to a cyst but it's still there and not going away. Can arthritic? nodules ( is there a name for them?) be soft, I always assumed they would be hard. The thing is, I've now found one on my right knee. My knee-cap was sore and when I've been rubbing it, I've noticed another of thesel umps :? Any thoughts are welcome,
Magenta x

    Hi Mike,

I use ice packs to reduce swellings. Usually I wrap my joint in a damp towel and then pop an ice pack on top - a bag of frozen peas work just as well - then I wrap that in a carrier bag and put a blanket on top of that to keep the rest of my limb warm and then sit for about half an hour. When all my packaging has been removed, I gently exercise the joint and this generally helps.

Although this works for me I'm not sure whether it would help you because you have diabetes and that causes circulation problems doesn't it?

You could try sitting with your feet raised and that would probably help too.

    Hi,
Nodules, I have on both elbows and on the ankle area. They are a sign that you have severe RA I am told. Had a couple removed on the hand that just became not a pretty sight. They are not really a bother since they are not attached to the joint but can become sensitve at times. Surgically removing them is not a big deal as long as it's covered however it is a operation so, some surgeons don't like to do it unless it's medically necessary. Actually I had a couple disappear over the years for no apparent reason.
    Good luck.

Hi Magenta I have one on each elbow a couple on my heels and 9 on my hands 4 on one finger they can become a bit tender at times and i have 1 on my thumb that gives me no end of pain when i use my hand. Hospital will not remove them as they say it is just cosmetic. My own fault because when asked why i wanted them removed i said because they look so ugly and they do. So they said no lol

    Thanks all,
I think they must be nodules. The one at my knee doesn't bother me at all but my knee is sore. The one on my elbow does. Because of where it is, when I rest my arm on anything it's painful. What are they? Where do they come from-the joint? I'll have to google it

Hi there, I have PA (they think) and this past 6 months I have had 'ganglions' appear on my wrists, might be worth a google to see if your look the same?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. But i'm a newb here for a while and so i've been searching old threads for common questions i have. I came across this thread regarding nodules.

Now see i've had a cluster of mobile (but hardish) nodules on my elbow for a few years now, and a few others dotted around body. But i never thought they could be arthritic related.

As per my post in the 'Say hello' thread, i'm only just going through diagnosis of joint pain now after 8 years of problems - so i don't know what i have yet. But generally, do arthritic nodules occur anywhere in body or just near joints? If they're mobile under the skin does it mean they're not related to arthritis?

    Cheers,
    John

Cheers Toni, i googled the heck out of them years ago, but they seem to fall under everything from fibroid lesions to subcutaneous cysts and lipomas. I think i was happy to consider them benign cysts, but i never thought about a link to arthritis. I thought arthritic nodules were always extensions of bone. Will google more tonight :)

And yup, i'm booked into my first rheumy consult on the 22nd. The GP took bloods and sent me a letter saying specialist advise was needed and referred me. Don't know if that means he did or didn't see anything in blood tests?

    Thanks for asking,
    John
