Hi All

Wasnt too sure where to post this............if its in the wrong place please feel free to move it.

I have my next Rheumy appointment on 20th Jan, this will be my seconf appointment. My last appointment I was prescribed Naproxen and Tramadol. We briefly discussed DMARDS but hubby and I decided that we needed to talk about when we wanted to start a family.

Anyway...........lots of tears and talking have passed and we have decided that its probably best for me to start meds now and we will look at things again in about a year and a half or so. I was kind of ok with this decision however now, the closer my Rheumy appointment gets the more Im doubting if its the right decision. We probably arent in the best position financially at the minute to start a family and I know we have time on our sides (im 24) but something just keeps telling me that maybe its not the right choice.

Can anyone tell me if DMARDS can have any effect on us being able to conceive once I stop taking them?

Dont really expect a response to this as I know its a decision we have got to make but was hoping maybe someone out there had been in our position and has some experience they could share?

    Hiya
I may not be much help but I've dealt with methotrexate since i was 4, I'm 16 now and am still on it! I've asked my doc everything because although I am young, I know I'll want children when I'm older and he reassured me that it'll be fine and there's nothing to worry about.
If you aren't still 100% sure then have a chat with your rheumy because that's where your best answers will come from.
Hope you're feeling alright and your next app goes well!

Hi, when I was first diagnosed I wanted a family, so I was started on Sulphasalazine as a DMARD, that way I could still try and conceive, but the drug failed the next course of treatment was Methotrexate. I couldn't have children on Methotrextate due to the risk to the unborn child, after alot of talking and crying, we both decided that my health was first, so started on Methotrexate, I was told that if I still wanted to conceive I would have to leave it a year before trying.

I am not sure if this helps you, at the end of the day you need to talk to your Rheumy and possibly your gp about things, you should get answers to your questions, and then you and your hubbie will have to make the ultimate decision love Jaspercatxx

Hi Parky, it must be awful for you but as the others have said talk to your Rheumy most are really helpful and understanding. You can read all the info on the net but write down all the things you want to say to the Rheumy for your appointment so that you dont miss anything out. I have read that after some time off the drugs you can start a family.
