Hya,

Im 27 and last friday was diagnosed with severe OA in my hip plus a femoral head collapse.
Ive had problems for a long time but just continued to dance and play hockey through it - so hence it has come as a huge shock !!

Im really worried about the long term (And short term!) i've been given an apointment to see the orthopod which has come through for next week.
My GP (after viewing the x-ray) believes a hip replacement is my only option. I've been forced to stop my dance and hockey and rest but im worried resting will make my hip worse !

Does anyone have any advice on how to cope with the shock of it all and what to expect at my apt next week?

Many thanks,

Claire

    Hello Claire,
Welcome to the site. What's a femoral head collapse? Sounds very painful :? No wonder you're shocked! Were you in alot of pain before this? Did you go to drs about this and that's why you've got this diagnosis? Sorry, you should be the one asking questions
Try to keep moving as normal but without the dancing/hockey. I know that's hard but try to keep reasonably mobile. I've never had a hip replacement but I'm sure you will get lots of help and advice regards this. All I can say is try not to worry, write questions down to take to appt. and don't be afraid to ask things here. Don't think of the worst scenario (that's hard) and take everything day by day. It's good you're getting a prompt appointment! Take care and let me know how things are going with you,

Not sure it helps, but it's still a funny story so I will tell. My dog was born with hip displacia and had to have a few ops. His last one was to remove his femoral head. The insurance company witheld the surplus from our claim. When I rang to ask why, they stated it was as it was a new condition being facial rather than hips as in the past. So persumably their claim department thought my dog had his head removed but was still alive enough for me to keep him insured...

Many thanks for your reply - it's great to know im not alone !

I suffered with my hip as a child and had it pinned, the pinning has apparently reduced the blood supply and my femoral head and the hip socket haven't been getting enough blood for several years now and so are crumbling away.
At the moment i dont have much femoral head at all :(

It has always been painful but i just expected that so to get told it's so serious is such a shock! Im very much a chirpy person but finding it difficult to smile at the moment!

Im sorry im negative - think i just need time to get my head sorted ! :?

    Hi again,
You will have your good days and bad days. I'm like you, normally quite chirpy but you can't be like that all the time. People I work with only see the chirpy side so I guess they don't think I can be in alot of pain.
I'm feeling pretty down at the mo too-don't know if that's any help  I feel like every day brings a new pain. Hugs to you(())

Hi ya I had a THR in September after much pain and lots of hassle to get it done becos of the age but in the end it was done and i am now in less pain from it when mobile and getting up from chair etc. I have had arthur since being a teenager. I had a choice in the end and I went for a THR as the hip was bad and they replaced the head and part of the femur and put in new ball metal on plasic but they do differnt ones and things depending on age and how active they think you are or will be everything has gone well and have had lots of support ie physio and OT, try not to be to worried easier said than done and we are all differnt Whilst waiting i did little things but in the end most things were painful all the best Chrisov
