Thanks for posting those, I am going to work my way through them. I have RA & OA, and had been taking diclofenac & co-dy for about 8 years. Last few months not feeling so good so have decided to knock the diclofenac on the head. I realise its a highly subjective thing and everyone is different. I saw my GP yesterday and he is aware. Also had a bad experience with surgery so I'm in a bit of a black hole at the moment regards where to go from here.

went for a walk yesterday, against common sense maybe but enjoyed it. hips were aching like mad almost throughout, now left hip feels like it is nearing to seizing up. I was wondering about paracetamol, it seems to have little effect as far as pain relief goes but one of my doctors says it is anti-inflammatory. this is why I looked up the information on it.
as far as diclofenic goes to me it is a wonder drug and I have no problems with it at all. I use it sparingly though. we are all different.mouseymousey wrote:Thanks for posting those, I am going to work my way through them. Thanks for posting this. I think I will try to stick with panadol plus as much as I can stand the pain. I did notice when I took the prescribed medication, it did not have much effect as I was looking to be pain free. When I take the panadol it does seem to take the edge off but they do make me drowsy, funny is it? Also the article has made me realised I have to give the treatment a few weeks to see whether it works. I tend to give up at the first side-effect etc. Thank you for sharing this with us.0

I have had bad side effects from diclofinac. I would warn anyone taking it to seek help from their gp if they suspect its not suiting them. This is something I did not know about and suffered accordingly. If in doubt talk to a GP as soon as you can. Sue0

If you check on the contents for panadol it appears to be mainly 500mg paracetamol. Ask your local pharmacist if there is any benefit by buying them or ordinary paracetamol. I asked about this, worth a query. :?:

Well said Toni, you guys, have made realised that the medication will not make me completely pain free but take "the edge off." I am doing my best from not taking prescribed medication as since I am a newbie, the worse is yet to come or hopefully it will stay like, manageable at the moment.0 -

I did ask, apparently panadol is a brand name. I have stopped buying them but use paracetamol plus from the supermarket. Boots seem to be more expensive, wonder whether they are any better or is it their name? Thanks0 -
I think you'll find most otc medications that have the name 'plus' or 'extra' conbine 2 or more drugs i.e. paractamol and asprin. So you should read list of ingediants or ask to make sure you're not doubling up by taking say, Anadin Extra and plain paracetamol. Sue0

According to http://www.anadin.co.uk/products/extra/ it says that Anadin Extra contains 200mg of paracetamol and 300mg of Aspirin
Woodbon is right about being careful. Well spotted Sue

I thought this was interesting (from http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/27000440):
How effective are anti-inflammatory painkillers?
After a single dose, they work at least as well as paracetamol to ease pain, and they may even be better. With repeated doses, they also reduce inflammation. This may further reduce pain and stiffness that occurs with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and muscle sprains. So, you might not notice the maximum effect for up to 1-3 weeks after starting a course of tablets.
If I understand it right, to reduce inflammation you need to continue taking anti-inflammatiries regularly for a few weeks -- whether you're in pain or not.
It's no good just taking them when the pain is bad.0 -

Can I suggest that you take a look at http://www.arc.org.uk/arthinfo/patpubs/6033/6033.asp
especially the section about halfway down the page titled: How can drugs be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis? Especially the paragraph on Analgesics.
It should give you a better idea of treatment. But, we are all different and what works for me may be ineffective for you. Knowledge is a great benefit for all of us.

Hi everyone
I used to take Co-proxamol too, and have hoarded a few tablets for HUGE flares. They are especially good at night I found, when I can't get to sleep for the pain. I have been told they were withdrawn because of the dangers of over-dosing - anyone know if that's true? and has anyone found anything approximating them? My GP gave me amytriptiline (don't know the spelling) but that just makes me dopey half the next day and I gave em up.
Cheers
