Anyone with R.A got nintendo wii with sports or fit game. Can you manage some of the exercises. Been told its excellent but not from people who have R.A. Would like non medical view as sometimes medical people like to throw caution to the wind to protect themselves.
Thanks

Hi
We have Wii sports and since Christmas, Wii music. I also have RA and found the sports too hard for me although I laughed heaps and felt so good after sessions with the children. I love Wii music though, especially conducting and playing handbells. My right arm was aching loads after and when I think about it, my shoulder has been a bit worse, but the pleasure factor is so high, it is worth a bit of discomfort! All things in moderation is my motto.

My grandaughter had one of these for christmas and she brought it with her to our house,we had loads of fun with it, it really made a change from watching the telly,I had a go on the golf, was rubbish, boxing, had them all in stitches as I put everything I had into it,and just a word of warning, I could hardly move on boxing day, I hurt everywhere, must have used muscles that hadn't been used for ages,so I can see how it would keep you fit.It was well worth the pain next day as it was the best laugh i'd had for ages.

:!: one word of warning ............
I have RA. My first experience of the Nintendo Wii was when 'helping' at the church youth club evening. They were using the bowling game. It looked easy - certainly easier than my experiences trying to lift and lug a real bowling ball round!
Iused the thing for a grand total of 5 minutes. I stopped as soon as my shoulder felt a bit sore.
4 days later found me at Minor injuries unit, and subsequently meant me visiting for 3 sessions of physiotherapy for a trapped and damaged bicep muscle!     .
I didn't realise that it was the Wii that had caused the problem - but when I told them what I had been doing before the pain started, they said straight away that that was certain to be the culprit.
It has certainly made me more wary of trying again.
Perhaps choose what game you use very carefully!0 -
Hiya
I'm 16 and have had nintendo wii for a couple of years.
I found the best exercise game for me is the wii fit with the balance board.
As long as you don't try to overdo it, I'm sure you'll be fine & have fun in the process!
Have had JIA since I was 4 & they say it's classed as RA now, not quite sure but either way it's a good thing to try, well I think so anyway.
Hope that may shed some light on it.
Take care everyone

Hi
I don't have arthritis and I ached after using my wii fit
I think its more to do with not being used to exercise :
I love it, its great fun and if you take it slow and steady and don't overdo it you should be ok.

Had my wii fit for my birthday at the very end of April. Had time to use it twice then this arthritis malarky kicked off so too scared to use it now
:!:
Kids love it though :!:
Think I might give it a go now you've all reminded me

Hi
Everything in moderation is how I've done it with the Wii and the fit board.
There is a truth in the amount of fun to be had it really does make you feel good to have such a good laugh over it.
I really enjoy the balance board and have found the yoga really good.
Hope you all have fun with yours

We have a Wii fit and a selection of other games and I've had no problems using it as long as I'm careful and don't push myself too hard.
The yoga on Wii fit is great and I got a bit addicted to the step aerobics especially as the board isn't too high so stepping on and off doesn't upset my knees as much!
My fiance bought the "Star Wars - Clone Wars" game where you wave the controller around as if it's a light saber!!! Had a go at that a few weeks ago but wouldn't recommend it....... wrist and shoulder were really painful after only a few minutes of playing.... I'm definitely not cut out to be a Jedi!!!
One of the best things about the Wii is that you are in the privacy of your home so you can go at your own pace.... and as everyone else has pointed out it is a lot of fun!!!!

We got our Wii last Christmas and have had hours of fun with it. I found that the bowling wasn't too bad but the tennis and especially the boxing were hard going and really gave my shoulders some jip!! So I would say the same as most of the others moderation is the key!!
P.S. Got our 6 year old Mariokart for this Christmas really good family entertainment. I don't know who crashed more me or Hubby!!!0 -
We bought our Wii and Wii fit after Christmas and I find some of the yoga and balance exercises quite good but I have to be careful and not overdo it otherwise it causes more pain.
My rheumatology nurse said that it might be quite good but just to take care.
We do spend more time laughing though, which I think is worth the money!0 -

I have one and my wife has the ballance board. She has found it great for losing weight. I can only manage the games where I can sit down to play, so ballance board is out for me and Tennis bowling etc I can play but get beaten as do not move round as much as m oponents. I also only play for short periods, but it does seem to be helping with my upper body strength0

My neice got a Wii for Christmas and she also has a Wii fit board thingie. I have used it a few times when visiting - I'm not keen on the games like boxing etc (too much moving) but I got really into the balance games on the Wii fit - I can feel it working my muscles but gently! There is a yoga setting also which I found a little tough but I think it's something you build up to... Fantastic for working out at home I think and on the Wii fit you get motivation every time you log in. If I could afford one I'd buy one! KT0

I have a Nintendo Wii but i'm thinking of selling it now. Used to have great fun on it when my mates came round but since developing RA it's just too painful. I use it for 5 mins at most and then have to stop. I then have to wait a few days for my wrists and shoulders to settle down before I can use it for another 5 mins.
I can see how it can have benefits to health as well as being fun, but, it's an expensive bit of kit to be sat there collecting dust most of the month. Also, the money i'd probably get from selling it will pay for a membership at my local pool and I know that my joints can out up with a bit of gentle swimming. I think that maybe the way to go for me!0 -
Hi I agree with everyone - although I havent had much of a chance of doing much on the wii fit we have had our wii for a couple of years and i found the bowling great but the tennis too hard. Had great fun over the christmas period watching my parents who are in their 70's trying to ski and header footballs - laughter made me feel a lot better cant wait to be able to try it myself!!0

Thanks to everyone who replied. I did buy it and I am having fun. i do ache quite a bit but it is so addictive. Bought package with sport games and bought a few extra. Bought family compedium game to use when I'm not up to doing the standing games. Thinking about getting wii fit and dancing game sometime in nr future. Glad I bought it as we are having awful chilly weather.0

Be careful with those dancing games. I had one for the Wii in the days before RA and they can be quite high impact even on the lower settings. Many of the tracks have dance moves that require jumping or twisting or both! I had a few joint/muscle injuries back then so don't think I could cope with one now!0 -
I have Wii Sports and Wii Fit and quite like playing on them. I just need to be careful that i don't overdo it and hurt myself but I find I can usually go on for about 20 minutes or so without too much trouble! There are some of the things i can't do because of joint stiffness i.e. some of the yoga poses but can manage about 90% of the exercises. Great fun!0
