Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the site and reading through peoples posts has really cheered me up. It's great how everyone is so positive.

I have had back problems for nearly 5 years now and I am 28. I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis in January of last year. I have been to see a specialist and to physio but still am not much different.

I was given sulfasalazine to take back in January 08 but have now stopped taking them as I do not seem to be any better a year on. I'm waiting to see the specialist again and just surviving on pain killers and amytriptylene. I try to stay positive but I'm finding it really hard at the moment. I have recently had to move back in with my parents, have no car anymore and no longer have a job and don't know what to do. I really don't think I would be able to work full time as I have so much trouble sleeping.

I'd love to hear from any one who has been in a similar position or has any suggestions on what I could do. I have friends and family to talk to but I find it hard as they don't really understand.

Thanks
Claire

    Hi Claire,
I wanted to say hello and welcome to the site :) The only thing I have in common with you is the back pain. I've had it for over 25yrs and I've had xrays (results due next week) and one of them was a lumbar xray. They want to rule out Ankylosing Spondolitis and I'm scared that's what it'll be. I'm having trouble with my feet, ankles, knees and hips at the moment and I'm staying away from driving for a while and it's hard. I don't know what I would do without my car :? As for going back to my Mum's-well, I know that wouldn't work  Also losing my job would be horrendous, I'm not particularly enjoying it just now but I need the money! I'm on amytriptilline and other meds too but I'm lucky that I get a sleep. I feel for you, you're not having it good at the moment. I would try (I know it'll be hard) and rest for a while. Let your Mum look after you  Then when you start feelin a bit better, start looking for another job but maybe not full-time? Hope this helps and you feel better soon. If there's anything else I can help with, just ask
    Take care,
    Magenta xx

Hello and welcome. I have oa in my spine and I'm have quite a lot of pain. I had problems sleeping as I find it very uncofortable to lie down. I've just been given amytriptaline and the last couple of nights I've managed very well. I feel sorry for you, living at home without a job must be very hard, but at least you've got someone to look after you! maybe a part-time job would suit you when you come to look for work, but don't rush it. I'm off work and I know the are hoping to pension me off as my work is quite physical, so I know how you feel. A job gives you a sense of purpose as well as money :!: Maybe you could do some voluntry work when you feel a bit better, just for a few hours, to get out before getting a 'proper' job. Hope all goes well and you feel better soon Sue xx

Thank you for your lovely replies. I think that I have been feeling too sorry for myself! It's just really nice to speak to people who know how I feel and can give good advice.

I must admit, it has been nice being looked after by Mum!

I feel more positive today and will try to keep it that way. Thank you again for your advice.
