I have had Crohns disease for 20 years. 2 1/2 years ago I went to the GP with back pain and was told it was posture. I was given exercise to do. I did the exercises and the pain went off but since then it has come and gone several times. I have had other aches and pains, knees, ankles, wrists (one being partially fused in March)during the last few years but thought nothing of it.
Since September the back pain, as well as other aches, have started getting worse. I have been to the GP 3 times since september and tried to get referred to a rheumy but kept being told that back pain was not unusual.
I mentioned it to my Crohns doctor a couple of weeks ago and was told that it was probably Arthritis caused by my crohns disease. He got me a Rheumy appointment for 18th Feb.
Does anyone else suffer with Arthritis caused by Crohns disease?

Hi Mandy,
I think I have got this right. There is a particular Arthritis associated/ caused by Crohns. Its call skel-something, or it begins with a S and there is info about it on this site. I saw it and read it today. I hope that will help you a bit. I do have Arthritis, especially in my spine, and I do have Crohns( they say probably at 99% certin) but it probably in my case is no related. I do know when my 'Crohns' is active the bones hurt more but as yet the Bone Consultant thinks I just have OA and it hurts more because of the activness of the Crohns and how rough that makes you in general. I have been promised that it is NOT a forgone certinty.

I have Ulcerative Colitis which is similar to Chrones and Arthritis. My first rheumy diagnosed me as having Entherpatic Anklosing Spondilitis. The Entherpatic meaning it affects the bowel as well as the joints. My current rheumy tels me I don't have Spondilitis, but I have seen letters from him to other specialists suggesting I might have it, but it has not shown up on any scan or x-ray. My last scan though showed severe wear and tear to the spine and nerve column due to dehydration. The dehydration is caused through having my colon removed due to the ulcerative colitis, so there is a definite link. Cartilages in all joints have dried up also, resulting in degenerative joint disease much earlier in life than it would normaly kick in0

Thank you for replying I dont feel as if I am on my own now I also have a family history of OA and have it severe in my left wrist most other joints are painful at times.
I did some research yesterday on arthritis and crohns. I have found that Azathriprine is used to treat Arthritis as well as crohns. I was taking this until april 08 for my crohns. I am wondering if when this worked out of my system that that was when my arthritis kicked in 10fold. Before coming off these I had join pain but not on the same level as I have it now. Has anyone else found this?
