Hi all

I was diagnosed recently with advanced stage OA in my spine, sacral area. A couple of weeks ago I noticed my right shoulder is extremely tense. It goes from under my ear, down into my shoulder, across my pectoral muscles and shoulder blade. It's sore to the touch and hasn't subsided in the 2 weeks since it started. I don't know it I should get this checked or if it has been caused by lifting my son. He is a healthy 24lb baby and I'm not sure if I am hurting myself lifting him a different way from usual as I am trying to avoid hurting my back. I wonder if this shoulder is taking the brunt or if it's a symptom others have had. Any help appreciated, thanks.

hi,id get this checked out.my shoulder, left side i have lost a third of the use of my arm & shoulder since nov 08.my physio said it was inflammation, took ibuprofen made no diffence, now its affecting my right shoulder.
i still try to do my physio exercises but its getting harder to move the shoulders.
mentioned it to gp 4 wks ago he wasnt bothered, back tomorrow will tell him again.
when u have pain u seem to over compensate by using good side trying not to use side that hurts that in turn causing more problems else where, does that make sense?

    Hi there :)

I would get it checked out. It could be that you are lifting differently so as to avoid straining your back and/or as a result it could be that muscles in your neck or the top of the spine are sending unhappy signals to your shoulder when lifting your baby.
Whatever the reason I would give it a mention as it does not seem to be improving.

    Hi all

Hi, you probably should get it seen, you may have pulled the muscle or something as when your lower spine goes you do compansate it and move out of line to avoid the pain. I do have a muscle from the base of my skull to just below the shoulder blade that wont un-spasam just now. It also goes or probably originates from my neck. I have advanced spondylois in my cervical spine and OA with some fusion in my lumberand sacral and Lifting when your back hurts may be what's hurting your muscle but you should just pop in and get it looked at. Your boy sounds lovely! take care

    Hi Alix
It is hard to work out why the pain is there isn`t it?! You try to prevent any further damage to your back but by doing that could be causing pain/injury to other areas eg in your case your shoulder. You obviously need to carry your baby at times and they are more of a risk than other loads we lift because they move! Making them unpredictable to carry. I know it is hard to have to keep consulting the drs but if you are in pain you need to ask for help and advice before you do any permanent damage.
I hope you find out what it is soon and get the right treatment etc..

Hi, I think you should get the shoulder checked out. I know its hard when you keep having to go back, but if you don't you may end up hurting yourself more. Good luck Sue x

You could have strained some of your muscles. It is important to maintain proper body mechanics. You see your doctor and tell him about this.. trans1

I get pain in my arm muscles and sholder blade when my neck is really bad. Its refered pain from a nerve they think. Pain is a very funny thing, if nerves are involved and the spine is full of them :!: :) Love Sue
