Well after all the waiting for appointments etc.. The much waited for letter has arrived. I have a date for my hip replacement op, 23rd Feb. I am pleased to have the date, but part of me now is terrified!! :? At least I have time to sort everything out, things to take in, childcare etc...
Wow. 2 weeks on Monday. At least I`ll be back in circulation for spring and summer (if we get one!!lol :? )

Congratulations on getting your THR date.

I'm sure your emotions will go up and down over the next two weeks (and after the op too), just 'go with the flow' and accept that it's natural to feel excited, terrified and lots of other emotions besides.

Like other people have said, accept that recovery can be a slow and an 'up and down' process, your own determination will get you through but try to strike a balance between doing too much and too little - not easy, as I know to my cost (having had a TKR in November and struggled to find that balance) - and use all the help you're offered.

Lots of luck and let us know how you get on.

    Thanks for replies.
-Wendy, you`re right, my emotions are going up and down already!
I feel like I can make plans for the future again, as I feel like everything has been on hold til we knew when the op was going to be. I have got OT coming round next week and I have to speak to the pain management team ( have left them a message) , so I will try to keep busy until 23rd.
I know the hardest thing for me will be the loss of control over things, arrangements, not driving etc.. Lots of people have offered to help, which is really good. I just don`t want my children`s routines to be disrupted too much. .......I`m sure it`ll all be fine (I hope!!)

    Hi Miss_I
It depends how you look at it really! I saw original consultant in october but my condition (hip dysplasia) meant that my op is too complicated for him. I saw new consultant at regional specialist hospital on Jan 13th and he said I was on urgent list for surgery. I had my preop assessment done on same day. So not bad re wait new consultant etc.
    I hope you hear soon.

Hi nearlybionic I am glad you now have that date trynot to be to nervous I had a THR in Sept last year I was in so much pain i was only to glad at the end to have it and get it over with and the care I had was excellent and I was also terrified as i am with any operation I have had, and the improvement in my new hip was worth it all as I am sure yours will be, one thing i did learn was not to rush it to so soon afterwardsalthough some were up and running before others as we are all different and do accept any help, all the best will be thinking of you.

    Hello NB,

So pleased to hear that you now have a date. I had my Right hip resurfaced last June. Very pleased with it. Like others have said expect a good few months of recovering. I was amazed that my pre op pains had gone on waking from the surgery and was mobile within a couple of days. But it is Major surgery and naturally the body will take what ever time it needs to recover. My advice is deal with each day as it comes, it cant be rushed and you will find that sleeping becomes easier after the first four weeks or so.

Eight months on for me now and I am so grateful that I had it done. :D

    Hi
Thats really good news - although a bit of a shock :!:  . Now you'll be really busy getting ready and won't have time to worry (hopefully :!: ) . Right time of the year to have it done, as you'll have the summer to get better in. Love Sue :)

Great news NB - you'll soon be a new person.

Don't rush things on the getting better front and don't expect too much too soon - not easy when you've got children to consider.

Hope all goes well, keep us posted and good luck :D

Hi and thanks to everyone who has posted!
I have started to get things together ready for going in to hospital, and made a list of things I need to get (new dressing gown!! ) My friends and family are being great offering to help out, help with childcare etc.. and trying to keep me busy until 23rd. If I keep busy I have less time to fret!!
Just a question to anyone who has had this op, how long do you have to leave it until you can fly? I was hoping to take a short break later in year. I missed out on celebrating my 40th as was in pain etc.. so want to make up for that. (and have something to work towards :D )
JK- I hope you hear soon about your op, but it will still take you by surprise when you do. It makes it all the more real, if that makes sense!

    Hi there,

Like you I have also got my date for THR due to hip displysia. Mine is after yours on the 3rd March, so at the minute I am trying not to think about it too much Though to be honest I just want to be able to do normal things again. Though I know nearer the time I will be stressed but just think the fact that recovery should be complete for the summer is enough motivation for me. Hope all goes well

    Hi Collette
Its good that you have got your date through too. The next 2 weeks will be full of changing emotions, but , although there is snow outside here, I am looking forward to the warmer weather. Especially being able to enjoy it painfree! :D
Hope things go smoothly for you.

I would think you'll be fine with flying especially if you are thinking of going later in the year - let's face it you have to get over your op first - but your surgeon will be able to tell you. I can't remember anyone saying anything to me about not flying until a certain date when I'd had my knees replaced.

    Thanks Linda and Cris,
I am trying to focus on the future (past the op!) and am looking forward to activity without pain. I will check with my surgeon about travel etc.. the helpline people said probably after 6 weeks. I am not planning anything til autumn or after that so should be ok.

:? Hi there, Just thought I'd give you my news update. Today I received a letter from the consultant asking me to go and sign the consent forms for the op , so i guess i wont be far behind you. I'm told its only a week or 2 after then and I'm already feeling anxious to put it mildly!

Not that i want to appear keen, but I've already gone out and bought new stuff for the hospital, how sad am i

hope all goes well, and your trying to keep busy (like me) to take your mind off it if thats possible jk

    Hi jk
I`m pleased that things are moving forward for you. I have bought new stuff to!! I think its like a distraction therapy for me, retail therapy! I have had OT here today measuring me up for loo seats, high backed chairs, raisers for dining chair, grabber , perch stool etc.. I felt a bit upset when he`d gone, it was a big reality check for me. I am looking forward to feeling pain free after I have recovered but am a bit low thinking about how it will be when I come home. I have people offering help but find it hard to be dependent on others. My grandad had hip replacements, and I associate the aids being offered to me with people older than me. I need to come to terms with it, and quick!

I know what you mean about associating those aids with older people.

I think of myself as a 'young' 64 and I was mortified by the prospect of having to use a zimmer frame after my knee op.

When it came to it, I was so grateful for the fantastic support and confidence the zimmer gave me that it completely turned my feelings around.

With the physios, I progressed from the zimmer to crutches (and fairly quickly after that to sticks) after a couple of days, but I still kept my zimmer with me in my hospital room and used it in the evening when I was feeling tired or if I got up in the night to go to the loo. It became a good friend rather than an insult to my image! (But I didn't need to bring it home with me!)

To crown it all, when I got home I was looking through a mail order gift catalogue and saw a 'racing grannies' game - a pair of wind-up toys featuring an older lady with a zimmer. I sent for one and now have one granny in my office and one in my living room, reminding me that sometimes help comes from unexpected and even unwanted places!

I guess what I'm saying is, if you find you really need those aids your feelings about them may change - and in any case, it's only for a while and they're only there to help you protect your precious new hip.

    Take care

    Wendy
