My mother-in-law has arthritis, (OA I think) and is diabetic & has a heart condition.

If that list wasn't enough, She has recently been experiencing excruciating pain in her feet which has been making any walking at all very painful. The doctor has decided (having taken loads of blood tests yesterday) that it is gout ......... but they can't give her the 'usual' gout treatment because she takes warfarin.

The only help they have given is to take regular paracetamol (which she is reluctant to do, but will give a go) but there was no advice about diet other than to avoid red meat and red wine (she's tea-total    )

anyone else had this problem with gout? and any tips?

I have downloaded the AC leaflet about Gout which has some good suggestions in. but just wanted to tap into the knowledge-bank on here.

thanks a lot folks!

    Certain foods can affect you.
    Avoid liver,rhubarb,citrus fruitsand spinach.
Apparently eating cherries or parsley is good for flushing out the crystals.
Pulses should be avoided too as they contain purines. The doctor should be asked if shellfish are allowed.
I understand that selenium can be beneficial.
Little snippets picked up off the internet when I first had trouble with my toes.(Not gout)
Someone on here will have the answers for you as they have for so many others.

I really sympathise with your Mother-in-Law, my late brother had gout in his feet and it crippled him, when it flared up. No solutions, I'm afraid. Love Sue

have noticed that most of the advice when I did a search suggested a low fat & low protein diet - she will not be impressed!

thanks for the advice re the specific foods. Interesting that she asked about citrus fruit and was told that she should continue to eat that ........... guess it is trial and error to see what will work.

    thanks for the replies

    Hi Wonky

There is wild yam and prickly ash bark on the alternative route but they would have to be ok'd by gp just to be safe. Don't know if they will help but it could be worth a try.
