Hi to everyone, I am new to the site but have read a lot of posts and found them very helpful but not found anyone with the same things as me.
It started with my hip which was a problem for years, I went to the doctor and to cut a long story short I needed a THR. 12 months later i needed a TKR ,I thought this would be the end for a while but since the op I seem to have been in pain all the time it goes from one joint to another my shoulders, back ,neck, hands they are driving me mad. The doctor says it is all part of OA ,he is giving me strong painkillers.
At the moment i have an ear infection which after a month of antibiotics is still there i feel it has something to do with the OA it all blends into one (neck throat ears shoulders) every thing is painful I cant pick things up because of the pain in my shoulders one day it is the left and a few days later it is the right and then back to the left.
The other thing i have is everyday i go really hot and sweaty on my head sort of feverish ,after about 30 minutes it carms down it happens about 6 times aday , this has been going on for about 18months. It could be the painkiller but i dont think it is.
My joints are'nt swollen or hot just my head, my other problem is after the hip replacement it left me 1 inch shorter on my operated leg which then caused me to have a Mortons Neuroma which does not help walking.
I am 59 and feel 90. I have been tested for RA but it is'nt that. Is it normal for OA to be like this? and has anyone else got this. Well thats it can anyone help the doctors dont seem to think i should worry about it but they are'nt living my life.
Reading all your posts does make me feel guilty about going on, some people are really in a bad way and my heart goes out to them people dont realize how much pain is involved in RA and OA all the best to you all .....................Alicea

hi, just wanted to say that like you i had a very painful hip for many yrs but due to my age (29 at the time, 34 now) they wouldn't do a THR so they did a resurfacing instead. afterwards i was still in alot of pain, several yrs have been spent going back and forth to see hip specialist and investigative surgery was done but he could find no reason why i was still in pain.
i've spent the last few yrs taking morphine daily as the pain was that bad. they did blood tests, scans, and many other things but nothing showed up, they started saying that maybe because i'd been in pain for so long before the hip op my body had got used to it and so still felt the pain even though it wasn't there, i felt like they were calling me a liar or a fake, it made me feel awful.
anyway, after having my daughter 2 yrs ago the pain 1000 times worse and started having flare up's where my whole body would sieze up, anyway several tests and months later i was diagnosed with RA and started on meds and things are getting better.
not sure if that helps you at all though?0 -
Hi Alicea
Have you been offered any physio or acupuncture for your shoulders, hands? Have you been tested for over/underactive thyroid regarding the "heat" issue?
I expect you have had xrays taken of your hands and shoulders.
I am sorry to hear you are suffering so much.

Hi thanks for answering me, I know what you mean about the pain in your hip, I had trouble with my hip since my forties and was told it was my weight. When they sent me for a xray they told me i should have gone earlier, they would'nt listen to me for years. My knee still gives me trouble even though i have had it replaced, I think a lot of people still have a lot of pain even though they have it operated on. I take morphine daily for the rest of my joints. I felt like you as if they didnt believe me which when you are in a lot of pain really upsets you. I am glad you have sorted it out not that you will be in any less pain at least you know what it is. all the very best and again thanks for your advise. ....Alicea0 -
Hi Alicea
I too have OA in my hip, still waiting for my first hospital appointment. I have found after taking my painkillers I get really hot and sweaty, it doesn't last long but is very uncomfortable. I was tested for thyroid problems a short while ago as they had become noticably swollen all tests came back clear, so I've put my hot flushes down to the painkillers. Oh and I've been through the menopause so I know it's not that. Good idea to get your thyroid checked out though.
Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Alicea,
I just wanted to ask you something-is your jaw sore? I was having earache, painful headaches and very sore/stiff neck for nearly 2yrs. Got all the usual tests done but it turned out to be OA in both sides of my jaw. I got a splint made and it 's been working for about 3mths but now the pain is coming back. I'd forgotten how bad it was. It affects my shoulders too (unless there's something else causing that :? ) I don't want to worry you but it's always something else they can look at to try and find reasons for your pain.

Hi Magenta Yes my jaw is sore, my earache is not what i thought of as earache, it is'nt a runny ear and seems to hurt more when i get in bed sudden pains the other thing i get is a pain in my head that lasts a minute of two and then goes away. I feel like i need someone to hold my head up it seems to be really heavy sounds daft it is hard to explain. The trouble is the doctor just says it is the OA and i have a eari nfection. He seems to think the painkillers are all I need but they dont take it away. Thanks for your help you have a really good point. I will try to put it to him next week as i have to go back when the antibiotics finish.l......all the best Aliceax0 -
Hi Alicea,
As regards to the sweats I think alot of us on here get them and it's part of the arthritis. Generally we get them at night but they can also come on during the day too. If you're not happy about them you could always mention them to your rheumy or GP.
I've recently started with hot flushes and they're totally different.

Hi Rita thanks for you reply I have wondered if it is the painkillers you are probably right but i thought i should have got used to them after 2 years. I have been tested for thyroid and it is a bit high he said but still in the range what ever that means. I have gone through the menopause so its not that.It must be the painkillers as you say I am worse when i need to take one so it is when it runs out rather than when i first take it. well hope you get a hospital appointment soon, my sister as been waiting for a couple of months people seem to have to wait a long time at the moment perhaps because they have to treat you within 8 weeks now so they make you wait to get a appointment bye for now good luck Alicea0 -

I have had a body scan but they did'nt tell me anything until i had my knee replacement op, the spinal block that they gave me did'nt work so they had to give me a general anesthetic i asked why it did'nt work and they said i had OA in my spine. That was the second time they tried and had to give me a general you would think they would read my notes but that is asking to much. sorry i was going off on one then.... that is my favorite rant they never read my notes and have caused me lots of pain because of it .Well Elna all the best and thanks again for your help ........Alicea0 -

Hi Alicea,
I'm fine, thanks. I am trying to keep my chin up but it's hard. I fell the other day at work, right on to my sore toes and my toes/feet are very sore. My jaw is also bothering me again-hey ho!
I was at my Mums today for a birthday party for my wee boy-he was 3. I've been on my feet all day and I'm sore and tired. Off to bed soon but I'm determined to have some wineHope you feel better soon,
