Hi, I've had many broken nights sleep since starting with 'arthur', but the last week or so have been terrible - awake all through the night even though I've taken my painkillers :(

I asked my gp for something to help me sleep, he's prescribed Temazepam.

Anyone on here experience of using this?

Hi Colin, thanks for your reply.

I absolutely hate taking drugs, only take them as a last resort. I wouldn't even take an aspirin at one time :)

Suppose I just have to get used to taking more

I think Temazipam is a less problematic tranquilizer because it doesn't stay in your system too long -- you should be pretty well free of it by morning.

And it's not so strongly associated with some of the nasty side effects of other tranquilizers (e.g. lorazipan )-- like falling over.

I don't take it but my mother does -- and has done for years with apparently no ill effects.

And everyone says that a good nights sleep is essential for coping with pain .

"And everyone says that a good nights sleep is essential for coping with pain" I agree entirely, the pain I have in my shoulder is always worse when I don’t get a good night’s sleep. The only problem is I am only sleeping just over 5 hours a night, 6 on a good night. My mother only sleeps about 4 hours a night nowadays. I hope I do not continue to take after her.

I hope it is not long before you are getting your full quota of Z’s again. I also absolutely hate taking drugs, though sometimes we have no choice.

    All the best

    Hi Jackie
My friend takes temazepam and swears by them. She does however only take them sometimes and I think she chops 'em in half even then!!! (Check with pharmacist that tthat is ok before you do though) she's a law unto herself!
I like Colin and others take amitriptyline and find it really effective.
Sleep is so important Jackie so I hope you've had some!
    Take care

Good morning folks, thanks for all your helpful replies :)

I was a bit apprehensive about taking it, had visions of being in such a drug induced sleep no-one would be able to wake me in an emergency (sometimes my imagination runs riot  )...... so I did in fact only take HALF of one :)

Result: Noooo, it didn't knock me out lol Instead I found myself lying in bed in the early hours unable to drift off to sleep - but I did feel very relaxed and kept dozing whilst having quite vivid dreams :!: Finally must have 'dropped off' about 3am until about 6.45. Well, thats still a bit more sleep than I've been getting lol

My chemist did suggest that I try cocodamol instead of the paracetomol I've been taking - he said they can make you 'dozy' and might have the desired effect instead of taking Tamazepam.

I might try that tonight; if not very successful I do feel confident about taking a WHOLE Tamazepan next time, after reading your postings. Thanks all :)

Do be careful with tamazapam, they are very addictive as they are short acting. Taking the odd one or two to break a cycle of not sleeping is fine, but they are not designed for long term use. They also work very quickly, as I found out giving them to a person I was looking after, she was wide awake and sitting in a chair I gave her the dose, left for a few minutes and went back to find her fast asleep. I managed to half carry half drag her to bed! The lady suffered from dementia, and had a few to give her rest. Anyway, after that I always made sure the patient was in bed before giveing them tamazapam!!! I wonder why my back is bad??? :) Love Sue

Apparently you only really need 7 to 6 hours sleep.

And I believe it's very good to take a siesta in the afternoon -- the first few times you do it you'll feel groggy but after a short time you will be able to wake refreshed.

And the other think people say about sleep is that you shouldn't use your bed for reading, watching TV etc. Just get in and get off if you can.

And if you can't, it's supposed to be better not to lie there. After half an hour or so of no sleep they recommend that you get up for a while and listen to some music or something out of the bedroom.

    Hi folks,

    Thanks for all advice :)

Toni, I haven't taken a whole one yet, last night I thought I'd try the cocodamol as the chemist suggested. Well I took two a couple of hours before bedtime. By bedtime I was quite sleepy, and slept 'til 3.30am, then I took another two and dropped off quickly 'til about 7.30.

Now I don't know if it was the cocodamol or just the fact I was so very tired by last night anyway :) still, I'm gonna try the cocadomol again tonight and leave the Temazepam as a last resort :)
