Hi Anne
I haven't had knees done but had trouble with both feet. When I started walking again I started on parallel bars and then onto a pulpit frame. Could be the same for knees? I'm sure someone will be able to tell you for sure though.

Hi Anne,
I had bi-lateral knee replacements nearly nine years ago when I was 42. There was no choice offered to me by my surgeon as both my knees were shot. The first time you weight bear afterwards it does hurt (well it did for me), I think I was made to get out of bed the next day...but it's not the terrible pain of bone on bone which you're probably experiencing now. You'll be given a walking frame to help you around in the hospital and walking aids for when you go home.
Don't expect too much too soon. Don't forget you're having major surgery and they cut through nerves and other tissue which will take a long time to heal. Things improve also when you have your staples out. They may swell periodically especially if you do too much and that's the time to ice pack/heat pack and rest them. ( You'll possibly have numb patches on your knees for a long time where they've cut through the nerves these can take years to heal  )
You will gradually get back into walking again and as long as you do your exercises you'll probably be walking better than you have for a long time.
Hope all goes well for you.

Hi Anne
Only had one knee done so cannot cannot help you!
I wish you good luck! I expect you will have to work doubly hard with the physio initially. At least it will be all over at once. I asked my consultant about having both done at the same time and he said he was not keen to do that. So my question was answered and I only wished for him to do the op.
I personally had a lot of trouble with pain afterwards although mobility was gained excellently very soon, so on hindsight I am happy that I did not have both done at the same time.
I heard of someone who had both done and after the initial standing up after the op and everything "clunking" into place there was no looking back and recuperation went very smoothly.

My left TKR is on 30 March so I wish you well. The consultant wouldn't have offered two if he didn't think it was necessary and didn't think you were suitable for it. I am sure you are in good, safe hands.
I was offered both at once but decided to have the worst one done first to see how it goes. Hope to have the right done in the autumn or next spring if necessary and all is OK with the left.0 -

Hi Anne,
Im new to this forum. Ive got Rheumatoid Arthritis, Im only 43 but got my left knee replaced four months ago. It was a bit painful for about 6 weeks but since then it has been no bother, just a few twinges now and again. I could not walk without crutches before I got it done so am grateful now to be able to toddle about no bother.
Not climbing hills yet tho!!!!!!0 -
Hi
Good luck to you and also to Brian for his op. Just to encourage you, a friend of mine had both knees done at the same time about 15 years ago. Since then she has been able to do all sorts of things which she never believed possible, and has walked miles round Disneyland with her grandchildren only recently. Her knees are showing no sign of wearing out after15 years. I am trying to make up my mind whether to have my knee done at the moment, so my friend is encouraging me to go for it.

Hi
I hope your knee ops go well. I also have OA in both kness my left is the worse. I can't offer you any advice because I haven't been referred to see a specialist yet. It must be hard to manage without your diclofenac - can you take anything else for the pain? Try using heat pads, keep warm too. I bought myself a few sets of thermal underwear - lady janes, thermal t-shirts, and it has been a godsend. You must tell your GP about the pain. I have a massage seat which helps ..I don't know how I would cope without diclofenac. I also take co-dydramol and amitriptyline at night. Take care. My heart goes out to you. Hopefully someone on this site may have some good tips for you.

Good luck Anne. I had 'only' one knee replaced but I'm sure your consultant wouldn't have offered you two if he or she didn't think it was the best for you. Full recovery does take time but I'm sure you will start to feel the benefit very soon.
