Pre-Op Assessment

Hi All
I have my pre-op assessment for my arthroscopy tomorrow which is going to take between 2-3hours, what an earth do they do to you for such a long time?
Also, can I ask for a local rather than general anaethestic? it would make more sense if I could as I'm a single mum with 2 lively little boys and need to be 'with it' again asap.

Hi, I expect you'll have an aneathatist to see and the surgeon and maybe physio or a nurse to discuss how you recover. Not sure, really. As for a local, you can ask and see what they say, it may depend on what they're going to do, but sometimes I know, elderly people have hip replacements while consous, an old lady of over 100 had a new hip, after a fall, and as she was a very bright, with it lady, they let her watch on the monitor. She told me all about it!! . A very brave lady! Hope all goes well. Love Sue0

Hi
My pre op for my THR took 4 hours +!!
They do temperature, pulse , blood pressure, weight etc..
Take specimens :blood, urine, MRSA swabs etc.
Lots of paperwork, previous medical history, medications, previous op`s etc..
Get signatures, give out leaflets, information etc..
? X rays if needed
You see the anaesthetist to discuss options, so you would have a chance to discuss not having a GA.
Take a book!!

Hi Ana
I had arthroscopy last Dec. My pre-op assessment didn't take as long as that. There were a few things to do, like being weighed, blood pressure etc. and then the op was explained to me before I signed the consent form. I was able to ask any questions, too.
I had a local anaesthetic, which I think they prefer because it is safer. I don't remember anything about the op because I think I was given a sedative. I was frozen up for a while afterwards, but soon thawed out. It was a bit painful at that stage, so you will need some pain relief.
It is going to be difficult for you to rest afterwards with two boys, but try to take it easy if you can. I think I overdid it a bit and set myself back. It is important to do the exercises they show you to keep mobile.
I didn't think my op had worked at first, but now I am much better than before I had it.
Good luck
