Hi everyone, well Im on the big countdown now. went to a Hip and Knee replacement therapy clinic yesterday. I was the youngest there  Mmmm. It was a bit daunting when the sister showed us all an actual replacement hip joint. There was no nasty surprises, it just makes it seem all too real. All the older people didnt seem phazed at all, and only wanted to no about when they could go off on a coach holiday and getting to the loo

Upto now Im going to opt for an epidural, as they said its easier to get over, no nausea etc, and you can have a cup of tea after :) they make it sound so easy HA! Im taking Arnica, its supposed to help with swelling. Im willing to try anything that will help.

Any hints or tips much appreciated jk

    Hi Jk
OOOoooh I ould be nervous too, but exited!
You sound as though you are preparing well and I am told the epidural is the right way to go for a quicker recovery.
Those older people ARE rather brilliant aren't they. When I had my back done I was the baby there and I WAS the baby too. I won't even let them take those venflon things out without a panic!!He he!!
Seriously do you go in wednesday then??
    Thinking of you

Hi dont worry when you get there everyone helps each other , you will be fine . the epidural is great you can chat and have a cup of tea when you get back to the ward. The worst bit is waiting and everyone feels the same so you all talk to pass the time. good luck just think how pain free you will be after , I am so glad i had it done its 2 years ago and my hip is painfree after years of horrible pain, I was in a wheelchair before i had it done, I was 57 so quite old but still terrified. chin up .......alicea

    Hi,

Just want to wish you luck for your operation. I will be five weeks post op on tuesday at 35 so do not let age worry you. Afterwards it is a different pain but as nearly bionic has said it is a slower process than you initially think. It is important to stay positive, I still have the odd down day but I put it down to the shock of the op and the fact that I was so caught up in the op I did not think about afterwards. Things I was not shown that you should get physio to show you are getting in and out of the bed and the car.

Anyway take care and get out and about as much as possible over the next five days.

    And good luck again

Hi everyone and thankyou all for your kind words, advice and encouragement! I think Im getting on my families nerves now; Im a bit ratty , and trying to get stuff done to help my hubby out, so weve had a few cross words. I tried to watch a video of the op on YouTube, but after 30 seconds I turned it off; I dont think i want to know what goes off in too much detail! Tomorrows the start of the holidays for my kids, so were off to go and get some new school clothes, and will try to go to the cinema at some point. Thanks again jk :)

    Hi Ikesother
I know just what you are going through - I have 10 days to wait for my THR. I also turned off a video of an op after 30 seconds! - I just couldn't watch, though usually I'm pretty good with stuff like that.

If you are like me, you can get a bit emotional, too, can't you? Very up and down. Congrats on choosing an epidural - supposed to be safer, too isn't it? I haven't been offered the choice though suppose I will get to talk to an anaesthetist on the day. Lots of luck with the op, and I wish you a quick and steady recovery. I am just telling myself that in 6 or 12 month's time, I will be able to do a bit more than I can now, and with less pain.

Good luck with your op. I'm still waiting for a date so I'll be watching what you have to say after, the same as I have with NearlyBionic.

    Lots of luck, JK !

I had a TKR last November, my main tips for surviving the hospital stay is to do everything the physios tell you, and to be polite and courteous but firm if there's anything about your care or the situation that you're not happy about.

Hope it all goes well, and look forward to hearing further news post-op.
