Can OA burn itself out?

I have heard somewhere that painful joints like hip or knee sometimes reach a certain level of pain then for no apparant reason the pain goes away, 'though presumably Xrays and cartilage damage remain the same

Maybe I am clutching at straws - but if i thought that was even a remote possibility it would give me some hope
I do have a friend who was scheduled for a hip replacement then all of a sudden her pain subsided and she was taken off the waiting list .She was not particularly disabled with it and pain was her main reason for surgery

Anyone heard of this or know what persentage of people that happens to ?

    Hi
I think that OA can get to a stage that damage is there but the disease process can get to an end stage. For some this can mean less or no pain. I hope this is the case for your friend and she can avoid surgery.

    Hi,
As nearly says it can and my lumber has nearly finished..... It does hurt less...... Sometimes! The damage its done doesn't heal and mine now seems to be shifting to one side a bit so I think, over all,if they could give me a new one I would jump at it!
I hope your friend finds it burns out with out taking her mobility away as thats what it tends to do as it burns out. I think it could vary as to how much damage it does before its ended. Take care

From what I am led to believe most OA is very slow in its progression and has long periods of remission when the development is halted.
I think for most of us on here we are the ones who don't burn out, I do hope it is good news for your friend. Linda

Hi I'm going into end stage OA of the spine. I had it for 21 years before I knew what was wrong. I always had back pain from age 12 when I had a spinal illness, sometimes it was very bad but I just assumed it was side effects of my illness. I did 2 marathons not knowing the sore back I had during them was OA. I wish I'd known.

At my appointment with the Consultant in January he said I had bone to bone contact as the OA is severely advanced, I have several bulging discs and spinal stenosis because it's so far on. The sciatica that comes with this is worse sometimes than the OA.

BUT - he did say soon the pain would decrease and then it would be extreme stiffness that followed. I don't know what to think because the stiffness I have now causes me great pain and I'm frightened this will get worse. But I'm hopeful he's right and the pain will go. Take care x

My osteopath says that scar tissue starts to form in the joint where the cartilage was and it is this that reduces the pain felt, a long wait though?

    Cheers

Juvenile RA can burn-out after a period of time. But, I have not heard of OA doing the same.

I've got OA and I've had it about 3 years or so. I get pain in lots of places, it seems to move around! I think I'd worry that the stiffness from the burnt out joints, especially the hips and kness etc may severly effect my mobility. I'm not yet at the stage of needing hip replacements and hope it won't happen, but if it did I think I'd deffinatly go for it! :) Love Sue
