Hi! :)

I am new to this forum although I have been suffering from osteoarthritis for the past 13 years or more. I am 58 years old . I suffer pain in both my knees, hips, neck, fingers and toes. I had a full replacement hip operation on my right hip in January 2009.
I am thinking about going back to my Yoga class after the Easter school holidays but I will have problems getting up and down off the floor so I am thinking of taking a wee step with me to lean on to help push me up again. It really gets upsetting when you can't do the things you used to do when you were fitter. I want to continue with my Yoga but I am not sure what positions I should be able to do and the ones to avoid. Everyone assumes that now that I have had my hip done all my pain should be gone but unfortunately all my other arthritic bits are still sore so I still look and feel like an old woman when I get out of bed in the morning or get up of a chair after sitting for a long time. Once I get going and start walking about it eases off as you will all know. When I go to the Yoga class I know it will be a struggle to get off the floor but I do want to try to get back so if anyone can help with Yoga advice I would be grateful.

Hello, and welcome to the site, I hope you find it helpful. :) Have you discussed this with a physio or your GP? It may be helpful to you to know what they feel. Also your Yoga teacher, should be able to give you some advice and help. I know its hard, having to give in to OA, but if you've had a replacement it may be you need to be very careful for a while. I don't know, as I'm not a medic, but I think it may help you to get medical advice. Love SUe

By now I expect you have finished with physio and seen the consultant and he is pleased with your progress.

Perhaps you could be given some chair exercises to do instead of doing them all on the floor and having to keep getting up and down

When you return to your yoga class I hope your teacher has knowledge of people who have had hip replacements and she and you can work together more to begin with.

Have you googled anything about yoga after a total hip replacement? You may find some useful tips that way.

I see no reason why you should not be able to return.

    Look after yourself.

    Best wishes
    Elna

If you can lay down at night knowing in your heart that you made someone's day just a little bit better, you know you had a good day.

Hi Joseph. Hope you are feeling a lot better now!! I do taichi at the mo. After my second hip op, due May, I hope to join the "sitdown" class.

There are yoga teachers around with physiotherapy qualifications but it may be best to stick to the teacher you have. Gentle exercise will be better for the healing process so take it easy!!!
