Can I ask a question?

Hi,
Could I ask you a question? This is slightly embarrassing, as I don't want to come across as a wimp  when as sure some of you have had lots worse, but I was wondering about pain relief after surgery? Know it will be very different from the 'usual' pain  but am worried that I won't manage very well. Have done the googling for foot surgery and have come to the conclusion that screwing bones together has got to be painful! Sorry I am rambling on but this is niggling at me and am a way off being able to discuss it at the hospital yet.
Thanks,
Josie

Hi Josie,
After any orthopaedic surgery you're given pain relief whilst you're in hospital and also for when you leave, you won't be left high and dry.
My sister had a bunion removed and screws put in toes to straighten them and I'll be honest , it was painful. The big mistake she made was that she didn't rest it enough and so it kept swelling which did impede healing - don't try to do too much too soon is my advice.
My friend down the road has just had a similar op and has been almost painfree since - we're all different.

Hello
This is my first post as I only joined yesterday.
I had day surgery on my foot in September of last year. I had an arthritic toe repaired, smaller joints cleaned up, and a spur and a bunion removed. I now have a screw and two pins in my foot. I was given ibruprofen for inflamation and paracetamol for pain and they worked for me. I had to rest for six to eight weeks. Healing does seem to take a long time, but I can walk now and wear some shoes which I could not do before.
Best wishes and good luck with your foot.

Thankyou for that - I am really glad to hear that you are doing well with your foot!
I am hoping to get similar results: primarily to walk better, obviously, but if I can have more options with shoes I will be very happy! I am planning to have my big toe fused at the base. I do hope all continues to go well for you, and welcome to the site, by the way!

Hi Josie,
I had both my feet pined, bits removed and joints removed and I promise you they do all they can to keep you comfy. If you keep them still its not so bad, if you move them it does hurt but you tend to only do that once. They used injections and keep you floating for the first 24 hr and after that if it still is bad they give you more.
As Legs said they send you home with a lot of pain relief stuff as well so don't worry too much as it will not be as bad as you fear. take care Cris x0 -
Thankyou everybody, that makes me feel better!! Don't know if it's done as a day case or not as the hospital has helpfully changed its website and I can't find the info that used to be on there!
Sure will find out soon enough! Thanks again! Josie X

Sorry Josie, rattling on about impossible bottles, and I hadn't seen this.
As others have said, the hospital staff will not let you be in pain, they will be wonderful and you'll end up wondering why you were worried at all.
Good luck and best wishes with your operation and time in hospital. xx0 -
No worries, no need to apologise at all!
Thankyou - will have a while to wait yet-almost wish could just go in tomorrow and get it done with! (Might not say that in a few months though!)

Hi Josie,
Probably an overnighter I think, you need to see a physio before you go. They did my toe removal as a day case, the toe fusions were joint removals and then fused and there were 3 and that was 3 days but I was driving my self home. The feet rebuild was 2 days and in my case I an like a caged lion and they are in a hurry to get rid of me. x0 -
Youre right-would prefer it to be I think - I'm not known for waking up too fast and being bundled in a car immediately afterwards is not my idea of fun! They will be getting all these questions when I go, believe me!0

Make sure you make a list so you don't forget to ask something. I think they asked me if I wanted 2 or 3 days once so there must be a bit of lee way. I just want out any way possible.......0

That's a good idea - did discuss it a little last time but was ill with something else at the time and didn't have the brainpower to think about it too much so they offered to do another steroid injection while I thought about it.0

Morning all! Hope everyone slept well??! Guess what I dreamt about last night - that's my brain's way of telling me it's on my mind!! Ho hum!! That'll teach me to be reading about it last thing at night, won't it?!0
