Hi I am new to this but here goes.
I had a total hip replacement seven weeks ago and have started to get some pain in my thigh and new hip. I have been doing more this last week, is this normal or should I rest more I don't see my consultant until next Thursday. It was not a straight forward hip replacement as I have had lots of surgery on that hip before it took three and a half hours and I was very sore. :(

    Hi debbie

Welcome to the forum. Have not had a hip op but taking into account that it was not a straightforward op I would say that perhaps you have overdone it a little and may need to rest more. Would a heat or ice pack be of any help do you think? It is not that long to wait for your appointment, being next Thursday.

Try to take it a little easier is my humble opinion. That cannot do any harm can it?

    Luv
    Elna x

    Hi Debbie
I also had a THR 7 weeks ago, and have found that for past couple of weeks I have had groin pain and thigh pain. I was seen by my physio when it first happened and she said I had been overdoing it, and my GP referred me for an x ray which was ok. The dr at the hospital said it was probably bursitis. I am still using my crutches if I go out but not so much indoors etc.. My physio said using the crutches will not slow the healing process down, it will probably prevent any overexaggerated (sp?) gait.
I am due to go back to see my consultant next Tuesday so will be able to ask then.
Did you have an uncemented replacement? Mine is, and I have read that you can get thigh pain with these type for months, intil it has fully grown in. My worry was the groin pain, and sometimes pain down the leg. It wasn`t there initially but is if I have done more.

    Hi Debbie
I know what you mean about driving, I`m going mad looking at the car on the drive!! It is a bit more reassuring that someone else is having similar aches and pains at this stage. I keep reading how people are feeling totally painfree and walking without any problems afterwards.
I will let you know how I get on next week, and I would be interested to hear how you go on too.

Hi Debbie and NB (and everyone else)

Like Elna I had a knee replacement rather than a hip replacement but I'd agree that it's normal to have pain for quite a while after surgery, after all there's a lot of healing going on. Also from bitter experience I know how easy it is to overdo things as soon as you start feeling (a bit) better. My problem was that my knee never hurt when I was doing the 'too much', only afterwards!

So do take it steady - easier said than done, I know, but when the pain is worse, think what you did the day before and draw your own conclusions about what your body is telling you.

As to what NB said about reading about people being painfree, I think sometimes when we post on here we do want to 'accentuate the positive'. I know that when I was in pain I had mixed feelings about reading those posts - jealous and encouraged at the same time! But as I said above it would be a very rare person who didn't have pain after surgery, so don't feel discouraged, just take it day by day - another cliche but one that's really true in this instance!

    Take care

I had a cementless right hip replacement done in January and I still suffer pain and stiffness in my groin and thigh. It is still very tender where the scar is. I have been told it can takes ages before you are completely pain free. When I say I get pain it really is if I have just being doing too much. I have been having a go on my bicycle yesterday and today so I am sore and stiff tonight. The pain I am getting though is no where nearly as bad as I was suffering before I had my operation. That was real pain. The pain I get now is nothing compared to that. I thought I would recover quicker than I have but every week I find I can do more and more so I just have to be patient.

    Hi Moamethyst
I know exactly what you mean. It is a different pain, and I am finding that I am able to a little bit more each week. But I do pay for it if I push myself too far!!
I am very impressed that you are using a bicycle. Is that an exercise bike or a normal one? Have you been swimming yet? I am thinking of going soon, i like swimming and would like to up my exercise again.

    Hi Debbie
That is good news for you!! Have you driven yet then? My appointment wasn`t quite what I was expecting, and my consultant wasn`t in clinic. I have to go back in 4 weeks to be reviewed again, and was advised not to drive until then, as he (the Reg) thought I have bursitis and wants me to have physio. Luckily my hubby is off for a few days so I have a chauffeur on tap!
Did he give you any idea how long your other op will be? That was one of the questions I wanted to ask my consultant, but it will wait for next appointment!
You must be really pleased to have given positive news. Can you lift all your hip precautions now?

Hi sorry to hear your appointment wasn't what you expected I still have to continue with hip precautions for another month :( but they have said I can sleep on my side now with a pillow between my legs so slept better last night. The government says they have to do the op within 18 weeks and the hospital has told me that so should be done by end of August. Hopefully I will not be in so much pain then. He has told me that I should not push my hip with physio as the op was so difficult so want get back anymore movement :(
I did try driving yesterday only a couple of mile but my bad leg hurt the hip replacement was fine. I am lucky my husband gave up work at christmas to be my full time carer. It's good having him around but he does drive me mad sometimes so the car is great I can get some time to myself now. Do you have a date for your next appointment? Will you see the consultant at that time? You must be getting fed up with not driving I was.

    Hi Debbie
My next appointment is may 19th and yes I will see the consultant!
I am feeling a bit fed up about the driving thing, but, my hubby has had a couple of days off and we have been out. I must admit though, just being a passenger and walking round a few shops, using the crutches has set my pain off . So maybe its right I wait! :?
Have you been having physio since your op?

hi I am only doing the physio I was given in hospital I did ask if I can do a bit more to get my hip moving as at the moment I will not be able to get into the house as I cannot lift my right leg high enough. He said no get the house adapted he doesn't want me to exercise the hip any harder than basic physio. I did ask if I can swim he said yes but not breast stroke just crawl. How about you what physio are you doing?

    HI
I was discharged post op with basic physio exercises, but when I was seen on Tuesday the Reg is writing to my GP to arrange some physio locally. The hospital I had my op at is a fair drive away. He wants me to have physio due to pain, ? bursitis.
My gp hasn`t had a letter yet so no physio on order yet! I am seeing my gp next week to discuss stuff including the physio.
It is a longer haul than I thought it would be, but I think it has been worth it. Just need not to be so impatient!!
