Equipment hire

Hi,
Does anybody know of any companies that provide equipment on hire for a few weeks? I'm thinking of things like bath steps, little kitchen trolleys on wheels, that sort of thing. I can find plenty to buy, but am struggling with finding stuff to hire.
Thanks, Josie

Hi
Not sure of companies etc.. but what about OT?

Thanks, hadn't thought of that I must admit. Not sure if they would with it not being surgery they usually provide equipment for (I am thinking of it as will be managing alone at home), but it's worth an ask!

Hi Josie,
The Red Cross used to but I don't know if they still do? There are hire places here I will find out the name and maybe they are national? They are not cheap mind. Take care, Cris x0 -

Hi
If you ring the local hospital you can do a self referal to an ot, just ask for the ot department or you can ask your dr to refer you. if you explain what you find difficult to do they will provide the equipment you need for as long as you need it.

if you ring your local social services dept, they do an assessment & most equipment is free.my visit was from red cross.
i got stair & bath rails with the opion of walk in shower(but i cant part with my bath just yet,its a good friend to my muscles)they then made housing **** do the work,it took a while but sooo worth the wait now.
but i know they provide perching stools, kitchen equip, bath boards etc so worth a try there.dont spend money when you dont have to.
let us know how you get on.debsx0 -
Hi Josie
If you have a chat with your GP or Rheumy they will refer you to the right people. All this stuff is free on loan and the people who deal with it can be a great help.

Hi, I've borrowed quite a few items from the Red Cross, when my Mother-in-Law stayed with us. We did get it from the OT eventually, but we needed it straight away and they do that. Its useful too, if you have short term need immediate need for something, i.e. commode, wheelchair etc. Hope you get what you need quickly, Love Sue0

Thankyou all for your replies - I hadn't realised that OT could help with short term loans, etc, I'll be able to look into that now. Thankyou!0

Have you considered freecycle. By putting a wanted ad. on their local forum they may have what you want for free. Free to join and use.
When you have finished with whatever, then readvertise it as 'Offer' and pass it on.

You can self refer yourself to the Ot dept
I was referred by my cosultant. They were really helpful, made me resting splints, and gave me lots of gadgets to make life easier in the kitchen and beyond!!
After a really bad flair about a year later, they came out to the house and supplied a bath lift, toilet raiser and handles, a rail on my stairway. They also referred me to the local council for a grant to put in an upstairs ensuite wet room. I was then seen by the OT from the council social work dept. She agreed and had the work done about 6 months down the line. I got a 50% grant from the council and the social work dept paid the rest.0
