Recently when I move about I've noticed a crunching sound in my worst knee (I have OA in both knees). Has anyone experienced this?
I've had more x-rays done today - now I have to wait and see what the results will be. If knees are worse I'll finally be referred to a specialist.

That crunching sound is called crepitis, you do get that with O/A I do get that in my knees but sometimes its there and other times its not , go figure... my knees aren't bad enough to operate just yet... I hope that you get some answers soon...Our worst times are always our best lessons.0

My knees make a strange sound too and they feel like the same as when you squeeze cotton wool.(if you know what I mean)
My shoulders clunk in and out.
My fingers and toes make a ratchety noise, and my elbow has a squeaky sensation.
My hips go clunk too especially when turning over in bed.
Added to this my neck gives me electric shock type burns up and over the back of my head - nerves I think.
Then theres the pain. EEhh where do I not ache, especially with this rain.
Hope your results come through quickly

Hello, I'm sorry to hear you have arthritis. I'm afraid the noise you describle sounds familiar to me. I crack and creake all over the place. Sometimes so loudly people must wonder whats wrong! I have a horrible gritty noise too, which is also in my neck and that makes me cringe when I think of it. You may find, like me that sometimes you don't hear the noise, your body seems to tune it out. Thats how it is for me. Love Sue0

Hi Linda, just saw your message about your aches and pains and you have saved my sanity a little. I have cracking joints, my knees and hips crack when I walk across the bedroom floor at night and my other half can hear it clearly. I have pain in shoulder, elbow, hands, knees, and hips. electric shock sensations in neck and groin and crepitis at base of thumb and I was ashamed to go to doctor and complain because with all those aches and pains I felt I would be dismissed as a complete hypochondriac. It is just reassuring, although unpleasant for us, to know that I am not the only one with mutliple aches and pains and just knowing I am not on my own there is helpful. Hope you have a pain free day. Mags.lindah wrote:My knees make a strange sound too and they feel like the same as when you squeeze cotton wool.(if you know what I mean)

You are not the only one, most of my joints creaks and crunches. The usual places, knees have been doing it for well over 8 yrs. I am mostly worry with the noise the neck makes and lately my jaw seems to crunch when I open. I asked my husband and he dismissed me as if I am only looking to find things wrong with me. Will be going to see the dentist for 6 montly check up. I do not think I will mention it as I know what she will say.0

Hi Marie
I remember my Mum getting quite embarrised about the sound her jaw made when she ate, she kept asking us if we could hear it and didn't like eating out, because she thought everyone could hear it. I couldn't hear it, and used to tease her and say I could and what a horrible noise it made. I wasn't very old, about 20!

Hi Sharmaine
I used to get horrible noises in my left (worst) knee. Since I had a TKR I get funny soft clicking noises occasionally. I'm waiting for my right knee to join in, then I'll have a go at composing some music for them!
Seriously, though, it is one of the signs of OA, I don't think it necessarily means your knee is getting worse but the X-ray should reveal all.
Take care and all the best

Hello all
Thanks for replying. I'll just have to live with my creaky knees. I especially notice the 'creaks/crunches' when bending. I now know what the tin man in "The Wizard of Oz" felt like!greyheron wrote:sharmaine wrote:Recently when I move about I've noticed a crunching sound in my worst knee (I have OA in both knees). Hi All
My ankles and knees creak really loudly when i come down the stairs, anyone at the bottom often comments on it. I guess we will never be able to creep up on people now8)

my left knee is worst, if i keep my leg straight for a while it seems to seize up, then when i try to bend it it feels crunchy and like it's grating, but then it just aches abit, but it's always bad in the morning.
so you are not alone!!0
