some thoughts on seeing a physio

the appointment to see the physio came in the post this morning. it is more a mention of being in a que of he appointment will be about 14 weeks.
of late and after much soul searching, I have gotten my OA to a very manageable level, with long rests followed by walking and other work, gardening is my time absorber right now. plus my walking pole, hope Sue ( woodbon) is finding hers useful now!!!
I have to think of a reason for the visit, and my basic motivation is to get advice, on what to do, and basically if it will get worse as I get older, or will it stabilize.
I am going for an assessment, and any thoughts by anyone here, will be appreciated. apart from the odd pain, and ache things are fine now, though winter is the time I think we all fear. 4'clock tonight may be different though!!
I had a lot of nasty aches last year, and pains, thought it was all going downhill. what has amazed me, is how one week or month it seems this way, then later it seems to all but disappear. is this what they mean by the condition stabilizing?
So, I am thinking of questions to ask now, and hope I am not wasting anyone's time,
best wishes,
Nick

Hi My stick had an outing yesterday and was fine, thanks Its difficult thinking of the questions to ask, I suppose you could ask if the exercise you do is the right ammount and if it is likely to make things worse if you overdo it, or just uncomfortable for a short time.
Sorry, my brain isn't working! You could write down any movements you do that make it worse had where the pain is and how long it lasts.
Hope all goes well Love Sue0 -

glad the stick is fine, you soon lose any self consciousness, after a short while, and it may often be a source of conversation as i find my pole is, when out walking. I have begun to realize that a stick/pole should be used on the side where the least ache is, so if the right is weakest use it on the left. my own trials seem to point this out.
my concern is mostly about making my OA worse, having the tendency to overdo things. I wonder how great a factor is the weather in all this?
as for the pain, I can point out, it only hurts when I laugh!! see what they say??

HI Nick
Sorry to hear of your problems.
About the physio - good idea to go armed
with questions.
At my rheumy appointment in January this year
I asked if I could see the physio dept again as I
thought my posture was getting so bad as well
as my poor mobility. I have RA and OA but am knocking
on a bit.
Well the physio appointment came thru for beginning
of April and I saw
a lovely girl who after I stripped down to my undies
assessed me and asked me lots
of questions. The second time I saw her, she advised
me of gentle exercises I could do and also that I was
on the list for hydrotherapy ( not heard anything of
that as yet) but told me at the
next appointment it would be a different physio I would
see due to department change arounds.
Unfortunately all physios are NOT the same, what a horrible experience I had.
Think she was from The Psycopaths School of Physio,
when I said she was too heavy with me and I told her
it was too painful she didnt stop,
she made me cry and I almost passed out when I tried
to get off the bed. I trusted
her as a professional but it was hell. I had to tell her
to stop and sit and she told me to rest for half an hour
before I was fit to go.
So just a warning, be in control and dont let anyone bully
you like I let happen. Say STOP, enough is enough, thats
what I should have done. Now I have gone loads of steps
back just when I wanted to feel better for the summer.
Hope all goes well for you.

reply,
this is sad to hear. i agree you should be in control. one of my old weaknesses was to place all my trust in the medical profession, - this was an opt out for me, a serious personal flaw, -- not now though !!
I have had some really nasty experiences pf various kinds in the past. some of them are quite nasty people, but most I think are extremely decent. the sad thing is, it only takes one to make the rest of our lives unhappy. memories live on, sadly.

Hi All
Think Ive probably said it before, but we all know our bodies best because we live with them 24/7 so whilst we need advice on management and medical issues from our medical advisors, it needs to be team work. You need to be very active in deciding what is best for you once you have the relevant information.
Thats a terrible story about the phsio appointment, hopefully ones like that are a rare breed.
