I went to see a specialist las week regarding having screws removed from my knee following a car accident and i mentioned to him that my skeleton appears to be turning against me as i have OA in my thumb and my elbows have started to pain badly as well as having cracking hips, and electric shock type pains in groins and sometimes neck. He asked about symptoms and had i had pins and needles. i did see a doctor about eighteen months ago with a sensation of tingling in my feet which kept me awake and have had two bouts of vicious cramp in calf muscles. He pushed my thighs and said hips were fine, how he can determine that when i was sitting down and nothing felt like it moved i am not sure. he has worried me as i thought, and still think due to signs and sypmtoms that it is arthritis setting in, but he said that it appears to be a case for a neurologist as it seems like a nerve related problem. Has anyone experienced anything similar and how can I manage it as sleep is a far distant dream and i am getting quite desperate now. thanks

Hi there, I wouldn't take that advice myself.
I had Osteomyelitis at 12, it is a disease which invades the bone and destroys it, it is considered to leave trauma at the site similar to that of injuries such as from sports or breaks, fractures etc. I just found out in January I have end stage OA of the spine, it is called secondary arthritis because it is not due to age or wear and tear but due to trauma. I had it for 21 years, only having back pain from after my discharge from Hospital, getting more severe as I got older.
It is highly likely I'm afraid you may get arthritis at the site of your trauma but unlikely it will show up yet as it does take a long time to progress until it can be seen on xray. You should be monitored now always for this. An mRI would confirm any nerve related damage. I was never monitored and now am proceeding with a medical negligence case because I was never informed I would get arthritis and that I was not monitored for it.
Speak to your GP, advise them you know secondary arthritis can start due to your trauma and what are their methods for monitoring etc also you could mention you know it would be negligent of them not to do so. You definitely need a thorough chat with someone to get the best medication possible and see what options are there for you. I hope I don't worry you by saying you may get arthritis, I only want to warn you it's possible as no-one told me and I could have made so many changes to my lifestyle to prevent is progressing so quickly.0 -
Hi Mags,
I'm a rheumatoid and haven't had syptoms as you describe them. Maybe he wants you to see a neurologist because of the tingling sensations and electric shock-like pains - these, to me, don't sound typical of arthritis unless a nerve is trapped somewhere and then we can get pins and needles sensations.
Have you been referred to a neurologist or was it just a passing comment? You need to know what it is you're dealing with and get on top of it 'cos life doesn't sound much fun for you at the moment. I would follow this up with your GP if nothing else is being done.

Look up fibromyalgia. I'm having similar problems and It's been suggested to me that it's fibro that I have. I've looked it up and I do seem to have alot of the symptoms including the pins 'n' needles. I want to see a neurologist as they can do various tests to see 'if' its FM. Hope things work out for you,

Hi Magenta,
Nice to see you back you've been sorely missed.
Hope this isn't just a fleeting visit and you're able to stay a little longer.

I have just been diagnosed with Cervical Spondylosis, and I have symptoms similar to yours. I have cramps and muscle spasms, pain like someone is hammering my fingers, and the tingling in my feet and hands too. The electric shock/zapping feeling is horrible too. I had no idea that Cervical Spondylosis could cause all these symptoms until I came on here. I was seeing a Neurologist, as they thought that my problems were nerve related.
I find that my feet "drop" when they tingle if I'm in bed. It's this that seems to cause the leg cramps for me.
I hope that you manage to get sorted out soon, not being able to sleep is horrible, no wonder they used to use it as a form of torture.

Hello, I have a trapped nerve in my neck caused by OA in the cervical spine and I get a lot of strange sensations that used to worry me until I knew the cause. Have you seen your GP or rhummy? They may be able to refer you for x-ray etc to get a proper idea of what is going on in your body. Love Sue0

I too had pins and needles in the feet and ankles for over 18 months! I was reaching for a strawberry in the fruit cage when suddenly it felt like a whack around the head with a baseball bat!! I then found turning my head very uncomfortable....my doctor sent me to physio...I was put on this rack and they were pulling my head...that did not work....then they sent me to an oesteo....still pins and needles...a visit to the hospital on the isle of wight eventually was diaganosed as cervical spondylosis (the consultant at first was adamant that I was too young) eventually I paid private to visit a McTimoney chiropractor. After about a year of continuous visits for neck and back treatment...the pins and needles finally disappeared. I think Mctimoney are brilliant but are not able to access them here in France. From time to time I still get them if I have been gardening ect.0
