The website says:
It works on the principles of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (also known as TENS or TNS) but unlike ordinary TENS machines it has no attachments or batteries and can be used anywhere, anytime.
[TEXT DELETED]
In the instructions it says:
# Identify area of pain and place the PainGone on the point of pain
# Click the red push-button 30 to 40 times
[TEXT DELETED]
Uses piezoquartz to produce an electric charge, that's the crystal bit it refers to, (It uses a low-frequency electrical charge produced by crystals.) If you squeeze a quartz crystal it gives you a tiny burst of electricity. Quartz sounds exotic but you find it in sand, so quite common.
Useful to carry around as a small, hand operated, nonwired, TENS machine that you can use anytime/anywhere, but I would hate to push the thumb button 30 to 40 times.

Can I join in? I got something like this from the chemist - it's really for wasp stings, but it works on my thumbs! It wasn't expensive, and is the size of a sparkplug. Maybe worth asking.0

Hi
Don't complain about the heat, it is 10C in Johannesburg and I am freezing and all the joints are swollen and painful. Just had a steroid injection in both shoulders, knee and a steroid infusion. I would give anything for some warm weather right now. Although I do not think I would trade my 9 months of summer for the UK rain!!! Although a nice holiday in the UK in your summer would be great! Enjoy the heat! Vijay0 -
