Failed hip replacement

Hi,

Has anyone out there had a failed hip replacement operation. i.e. I Went into hospital for new hip, had loads of infections and then was sent out with no hip.

That is what has happened to me. Now I need two crutches to get around and although I have less pain, mobility has certainly not improved.

I would like to know if anyone else has had a similar experience and how they are coping.

Annette, that's awful, poor you.

I know you said you have no hip and have to use crutches but does that mean you have no moving joint or are you missing the bone they took away - either way sounds not good?

Haven't heard of this happening before, hope someone else can help you.

Sounds awful.I know some people have dislocated hips but not a failed hip-replacement although I have met a few failed knee replacements.Will they re-do it for you?or have you just been left to get on with it?

Hi Annette

I've never heard of this! Does that mean that can't do it? Will they try again? Do you know what caused the infection and failure? Do you have OA? I have heard that it's difficult with people who have osteosporosis - not sure if I've spelt this right.

You need some good luck and if it is possible to put it in cyber space then I'm sending you lots of it.

My thoughts are with you and I hope something gets sorted soon.

When I was having my THR in Feb the lady in the next bed had had her hip removed due to deep infection of new joint and had no hip there. I am sure she said it was a `sponge` type thing with antibiotics in, in the joint space. She was to have it like that for 3 months then go back and hopefully have a new joint put in.
Not sure if this is what you are experiencing?

hi annette, yes i too have a failed hip replacement. i went in to have the Birmingham Hip Resurface,done for younger arthritic peeps,op went great,but i kept going to the drs as i was getting pain, clicking and crunching going on in the joint,was told NORMAL,anyway 6 month review came alone, had MRI and x-ray,MRI came back as couldnt tell because the metal obscured the pics but that they found something wrong with my spine so had to go for bone scan,get this result on Thurs. i have been warned that i will be getting a total hip replacement like what they give 80 year olds is how i was told because i have been really unlucky with the BHR and that the cup joint has been placed too far up, oh happy days !!! am in agony all day every day, cant walk upright, cant sleep all thro the night as back, hip, thighs, and knees always hurt and wake me up.hopefully after my OAP hip replacement (!!) i will be feeling more like me again.take care, Sally.xx

Hi there!
Yes that is similar to my experience but unfortunately my spacer broke. Why I do not know. So I was told that there was nothing that they could do for me but stitch me up and send me out hip free ! I can walk with crutches and am fairly pain free but this is not quite what I expected. there is a chance that someone will have another go but my current consultant is not keen because he says that it is not likely that the outcome would be good in view of the MRSA and other infections I had.
