Have OA for the last three years in my right hip.

Seeing the specialist again next month and would like some advice.

Have had a bone density scan and will get these results when I go next month.

Specialist seems reluctant to replace the hip at present. Says I am too young! (58 years old) and that it will probably need to be replaced again.

OH physio says I still have too much movement to be considered for the operation. However, I am finding the pain debilitating, and have had to start taking time off work because of it.

Collegues who have had the op tell me to push the doctor to get it done. Possibly a financial decision by the NHS?

I see from the forum that lots of people younger than me have had it done.
Can anyone recommend insoles?

My big toe is starting to hurt alarmingly!

    Hello there,

I have just joined the site/forum yesterday, am not very good at these sort of things, so please be patient with me!

I was astonished that you were told you were too young at age 58 to have a hip replacement, especially as you are obviously in so much pain, having to take time off work etc. It is astonishing to me how the NHS/consultants/experts vary so much in different areas and it is so wrong. I am aged 48 and had a hip replacement 4 weeks ago.

I was diagnosed by a Rheumatologist over a year ago, at first the surgeon I saw said we should probably put it off for 2 or 3 years, because of my age. But when I went back to him six months later, he said my hip had deteriorated, I was in a lot more pain, struggling with work and everything, so he said, I must go on the waiting list immediately.

I have dealt with the NHS and other bodies through my son's disability as a child and unfortunately I learned, you have to speak up and push for things you believe in constantly. You must go back to your consultant or seek a second opinion, as they seem completely out of touch/barking up the wrong tree.

I know it's not easy to do, when you are in pain/at a low ebb, but I hope you find courage to do it.

    All the best

    Marion

    Hi and welcome,
I had a hip replacement this year and I am 46.They were pushing me to get it done.Incidently I live in Hillingdon, not far from Heathrow(assuming that is where you live). They dont seem willing so it might be that you will need to convince them.
Hope to see you around the forum

Thanks for your warm welcome. Never thought would get this decrepit. But reading some of the stories on here, does put my problems into perspective! At least I have the possibility of a new hip, and maybe my problems will be over. Bless you all
