hi all...
i am due to have my hip replacement replaced as my consultant thinks my constant pain is due to the fact that i am having an alergic reaction to the metal in my metal on metal hip replacement....have any of you had this swap thing done, and how does it feel now??? i said to my hubby that i am having a "hip downgrade" and going from nice shiney chrome motorbike parts to teapots
!!!!
i go in on the 3rd feb...so just getting it done before my 40th birthday...hmmmmmm...could think of other pressies i would rather have, but at least (hopefully) i will be minus this bloody pain.
thanks all, Sally.xx

Hi Sally,
I haven't had a swap done but I don't suppose it's much different from a revision.
I've heard that the ceramic joints are really good ....don't they give them to the youngsters because they're harder wearing? ....I'm not sure on that one though, I think I read it on the Young People's Forum some time ago.
Hope all goes well and, I think, if the op cures the pain then it will be the best birthday pressie you've ever had.

Hi Sally
Yeah I think legs is right, they do give to the younger patients I remember my sister who just had her THR in November telling me that she was having ceramic because she is young (she is 60) but to me she will always be my older sister. ha ha.
If it gets rid of the pain its worth it then you can have plenty birthdays pain free.
Good Luck

Are you sure ceramic isn't as good?, I always thought ceramic was the better option, I work in a coal fired power station and we use ceramic plates to line the pipes that the coal powder flows down as steel just wears out way to fast, the stuff we use is really tough stuff.0

i have no idea sorry!,
but i have metal in my hip to and before my RA was diagnosed i had terrible pain in my hip, which seemed worse after the hip was resurfaced, my consultant did allergy tests because he thought i might be having a reaction to the metel, have they done that for you?
i know my consultant didn't want to make any changes to the joint until he'd checked every possibility 1st!
then i was diagnosed with RA and the meds seemed to help!
good luck!

thanks all for your replies.
well i am hoping that this is going to be a fab birthday pressie, but i would still have preferred a handbag !!!! no painful rehab with that !!
i thought that ceramic would be a tough compound to use, trouble is i keep having images of "Armitage and Shanks" written on it !!!!
i will let you all know how the op goes, it was going to be an exploritory and reposition but in the end the consultant said that a total hip replacement would be better and more effective as this hip resurface with M on M just hasnt worked and there was no guarantee that a revision would so this was his preferred option.
thanks again to all that have replied, fingers crossed for the 3rd, bit scared and i go dry mouthed when i think about it but the end result will be fab.
catch you all later. Sally.xx0 -
Hi, I had a hip replacement last march and as I knew I was allergic to nickel so I was given ceramic and that was the reason I could not get resurfacing. Hope your pain gets better

i'm allergic to nickel to but had no problems with the resurfacing. mines made out of titanium i think?!
shows how different we all are!
good luck and fingers crossed for a very speedy recovery!

Hi there
Mine is ceramic on ceramic & I've been told this is harder wearing & I've heard of a lot of people having allergy/ intolerance to metals so it sounds as if your consultant is right on the ball & this will be so much better & more successful for you. I really feel for you having to go through all that again though but hopefully, as you know more what to expect this time & know you will be fine & at home within a few days you won't be quite so scared as before.
Just keep thinking of Jack Bauer & those fantastic 7 seasons of 24 waiting for you to help you though recovery!!
Love Pennie X0 -
hi Pennie, thanks for that hun, didnt realise yours was C on C, i am really hoping this will be an end to the pain........ohhhh and yes oh YES Jack Bauer...was it good?? Sally xxxx0
