Hi, has anyone any experience with "arthritis lung",I was fine, fit, used to run loads and do other exercise then was diagnosed with arthur and put om methotrexate, after 3 doses I had real breathing problems and went to hospital, no diagnosis, not unusual, then the consultant put me on Leflunomide with the same result. Then came Sulfasalazine which I was ok with for 3 months then the breathing problems began again and now they are with me all the time.
Thanks
David

    Hi David,

I haven't experienced this but there's bound to be someone on the forum who knows about it.......I remember someone posting about a lung problem recently but don't know who. sorry

Just wanted to say hello and hope you get some answers soon. What did the consultant and your doc say about it? are they linking the meds and the problems with your lungs? what are they doing about it?

perhaps you should go back and ask the docs more about this. You could post a question or phone the helpline team here ; they may be able to signpost websites where you could get some information or advice.

good luck with this. Iris x

    Hi Iris,
I have had loads of tests at the Royal Brompton Hospital for the breathing problems but no firm diagnosis, my rheumy tells me I am not typical of a patient with arthritic lung condition and test are continuing. My Rheumy thinks I am a cell type which reacts to strong meds eg, methx et al which might account for the problems with my breathing but no guidance for some relief
    Thanks for your reply

    Hi
I ahve breathing problems sometimes. Feel I cant take a breath in and everything feels tight?!?
I went to the hospital once because I was having pains in chest and found it hard to breath. They said it was to do with the arthritis and that it felt like I was out of breathful and painful because my sternum was inflammed.

    Hi David,

I'm waiting for results from hospital as recently had a lung scan and breathing tests. I was on Methoject (Methotrexate) but this has been suspended in the meantime. I developed a cough and breathing problems earlier this year and that's why I had the tests. Fingers crossed it was just a virus and not anything else. I have RA.

David, just a thought....as you would have had to have had a lung function test before starting your meds..............could it be a reaction to the meds? I know it was one of the things I was told to be aware of (breathlessness). ?? x

    Hi tamnwill,
It is possible that the meds made it flare up but I have arthritic changes in my lungs, on the scan they look like a bunch of grapes.

In that case David I would hound you consultant for more investigations.................my experience to date has been that i only got better treatment when I made myself a complete pain in the bum by questioning them thouroughly and demanding very politely that I needed answers and action for my own sanity. Let us know how you get on................give your R nurse a bell I would xx

Pleurisy is a common condition associated with any inflammatory arthritis. I have PA and have real trouble breathing at times. The pain can be quite intense and very wearing. Especially with the dry cough. I find that NSAIDS help ( more than they do with my joints at any rate!). The pleura is yet another fluid producing membrane (this one around the lungs) that goes into overdrive. As if we need another one!
