Hi, My Mum had arthritis of the spine, but I'm not sure of the name of the disease and she had to use a wheelchair to go out for shopping etc. but, walked on soft surfaces. Also she had OA. I think I read somewhere that if a perent or close relative had it you are more likely to. My OA is in my neck and spine, but not as badly as Mum was.

My gran developed RA in her 70's and got very deformed joints quite quickly and my mum has OA in her knees (which she developed when she was about 60) but i am the only youngster in the family with RA, I was diagnosed at 19 and have it everywhere except my spine and jaw.
Don't think there is a family link but apparently the fact that I had severe Glandular Fever at 16/17 should have been an early warning that I could have been suceptable for auto immune problems.0 -
this is a really interesting thread
my nan had arthritis bad in her knees i guess it was OA, my mum had to have her thyroid out about 10 years ago and had thyroid problems before that.
it does worry me that my children may develop arthur, at least they will know who to blame.0 -
Been reading the other posts - most interesting. I think there must be some heriditory link in some cases.
As far as I know no-one else in my family has RA. Howere both my children suffer fron asthma. So far there are no signs in them of any problem - I started at about 37, my son is 43 and daughter is just coming up to 38. So I live in hope.0 -
The worst thing was R.A prevented me from visiting mum in her last days, although if I had known she was going to die I would have got down to visit her somehow.
Iris I am very sorry to hear about your aunt.I hope you are okay.
Much love

Hi,
I have nodal OA, which is rapidly spreading to every joint it can get to, as it already has done to my Mum. My (older) brother has it in his hands a bit. Apparently Nodal OA is very strongly hereditary. The odd thing is that we don't know where it cam from before that - it seems to have completely skipped my grandparents generation, though there's some evidence that my Great-grandmother had some sort of health problems, we just don't know exactly what. My mum has also had thyroid problems - I don't know if that's connected to the OA.
What ever the reason it comes, I wish they'd find out how to get rid of it!

Thankyou Toni, that is really kind of you. So sorry you have lost your mum too, and your dad too as remembered in January on his birthday.
I managed to drive down once after getting R.A.I took my son Daniel. She only ever saw him that one time. R.A prevented me from visiting her ever again. Yes that is my big regret.
Love Elizabeth

Hi everyone
wow! reading back there seem to be 'patterns' to the same type of arthers in some families
....but whether we could say there is a definite genetic / hereditary link ?
it's confusing isn't it.... as it's not the same in in all cases so..... I just don't know. :? but it makes fascinating reading.
Some peeps have mentioned 'triggers' to their RA appearing and I know for me with PA it was triggered by another illness that turned out to be an autoimmune disease of the liver/ bile tract.
I know the bit about denial too...I would not accept I had PA for years! despite the evidence.. as no one else in the family had it...and yes I watch for early signs in my family too. x
I know for me that understanding the disease helps..so the more I know the better I can handle arther.

Elizabeth...sent you a pm. x0 -
Hi Iris,
Tis an interesting one this.....
As far as I know I am the only one with oa and pa but my Nan had op and my mother died fairly young so may have developed it?
Go to IBD and my older brother has it as well, my kid brother has deformed bones and had a double thr at 18. My sister has a few things (all genetic) and I have at least 2 other autoimmune things despite the parent not having any. Was told long ago that in my family it was the genetic composition and not hereditary..... Why I got the bones could be cus of 3 very bad childhood illnesses? Well leas that's one they can't blame on smoking or circulation
Hope your ok and leaving you a ((( ))) Cris xx0 -
HI I have RA and hypothyroidism, my mum, maternal grandmother and paternal grandmother have RA and my mum also has OA. (she is newly diagnosed at 62 with RA). She also has hypothyroidism.
My youngest daughter who is only 14 has been diagnosed with hypothroidism I just hope thats the only curse Ive passed along as I have 3 daughters and 1 son.
My sister and brother have none thankfully.
My father has diabetes but late onset type 2 he is 60. Luckily so far so good on that one.
Auto immune is said to run in families it just depends what one pokes its head up I suppose.

Hi Theresa! nice to see you posting
the connections between different autoimmunes is staggering! I wasn't aware that hypothyroidism has an immune connection or am I reading it wrong :?
I have biliary diskynesia and renal problems (both of which I've been told are autoimmune conditions) as well as the PA but no-one else in my family has any of them (thankfully  )
fascinating what 'we' peeps have...although it would be better if we didn't.

Yes hypothyroidism (Hashimotos) is autoimmune my markers are off the scale for that as are my daughters. Its the same thing the body sees the thyroid as alien and attacks it. Youd be suprised just what is auto immune. x
I wish I had inherited my grandmothers amazing legs, and my grandads amazing ability to eat anything and not put any weight onamazing what we get instead

You're comment about not inheriting the 'good' family genes made me smile.how true that is
keep posting Theresa and let us be there for you........others will be saying the same!!!!!
