MTX & Folic Acid

Can someone explain to me how you take yours? I have been prescribed 28 folic acid tablets, and 12 2.5mg MTX tabs, So I am on 7.5mg a week - I read somewhere not to take the folic acid with the MTX? Did I read this right or is it nonsense? I really should stop reading things on the Internet and confusing myself.

    Hi Lucky, you will find that the quantities of folic acid prescribed seem to differ between areas/Rheumy's, but generally speaking we are told to take them on any day but the day we take the metho.

    I'm currently on 25mg metho and have been told to take the folic for four days a week.

    Hi Luckybug,

    I take folic acid everyday except Mtx day. I was told I could take it even on Mtx day but chose not to after reading threads on here. Apparently it can inhibit the effects of Mtx. I haven't noticed any difference since I started taking it 6 days a week instead of 7.

    If you're unsure do as your Rheumy advised.

    best to check it out with whoever prescribed it to be sure of what you should take. Everyone seems to be told different things depending on their rheumatology depts thinking.

    I take 5mg Folic Acid every day except MTX day .... but am prescribed a whole months worth (ie 28 days) because there are some times when I don't take the MTX (if I have an infection) and I need the Folic Acid then.

    I was put onto tablet meth and folic acid years ago. I was told to take the FA the day after the meth, so I had five days with nothing, one day with meth, the next FA, then five days of nothing. Not only the internet can confuse, so can we! Different docs and different health areas have different opinions. Dreamdaisy

    hi, I take folic acid on 5 days. Not Mtx day or day after.

    Hi

    I take Methotrexate on a Tuesday and Folic Acid on a Wednesday.

    Thanks for your insight, I took mine with the folic acid this week but will contact the hospital and re check what he said cos I don't have a clue. Cheers.

    Hi,It appears consultants all have a different way of prescribing Folic Acid.I'm on 7.5mg MTX and was told to take two Folic Acid the following day,24 hours after the MTX. Breane.

    it can all depend on if you have side effects or not. I was originally told to take it three days before and three days after but because I was getting really bad nausea they changed it to everyday except for the day i take the methotrexate.

    I take 10mg of MTX on a Tuesday and was told to take the Folic Acid 5mg the following day.
