Hiya,
As you may know, I have OA in my jaw. I've read a few peoples posts on here about OA and wanted to ask something. Am I right in saying that once you have OA that it can spread into other joints? My ankle is still giving me a few problems but also too is my shoulder. A few weeks ago, I had to decorate my hall and after it, my right shoulder began to really hurt. It often does cause me a bit of pain but now it's getting worse. I've had to up my co-dydramol and it's agony in the morning. The pain is waking me up in the middle of the night and it's sore when lying on my left side. Anyone else have this?
Thanks,
Magenta x

Hi Magenta,
As ever nice to see you
I have a bit of shoulder trouble and have for years..... I think if it doesn't settle it might be best to get it looked at eve if its only to document it?
My oa hasn't exactly spread so much as I have it and the joints effected mean the ones above and below have to compensate for the useless one..... So though technically its not spreading as part of what it does it don't half hurt and get about.
As yet i have not had oa in any joint not previously damaged.... the pa well that's got an all access pass it seems
Did you get your ankle looked at? See I wonder if maybe you need a different type of anti-flam and pain routine? Pain keeping you awake is no joke. Sending you a ((( ))) and a hope you get a better night. Cris xx0 -
Hi Cris,
Thanks for replying. How are you? I'm sorry, with being away from site for so long, I've not had the time to go through every single post. I know you've not been great. Are you feeling better?
I never did go to drs with my ankle, they'll only say-go to your rhuemy! I'm going to a new rhuemy on the 1st November so I'll have a list
The pain is getting me down-I was like this (with pain) last year and I don't want to go down that road again. I agree with you with regards meds but I'll have to wait and see what rhuemy says. My dental consultant said they might put me on Athrotec? I can't take diclofenac so I don't know if I'll be able to have that.
Anyway, thanks again and take care Cris,
love Eileen xx0 -
Hi Eileen,
Oh flower the pain thing.... Its not too long to wait I guess and with a bit of luck this one will help you! Its sort of wrong that they all play pass the parcel with our bones and pain.....
I know the Arthrotec is meant to be good and with a bit of luck you will be able to tolerate it and find it helps. I really do hope the new one will be a good one cus its so much easier when someone seems in your corner eh?
Me...... better than I was and the drip has helped at last!
You keep in touch and sending you a ((((( ))))) Love Cris xx0 -
Hi Eileen
I too have OA and firmly believe that is spreads to other joints, no doubt in my mind. I am so many pills now, it is crazy, just to keep a lid on things. As my Drs say, it is management, not a cure.
I hope you can try the new treatment and that it helps you, sending hugs and take care, XXX Bubbles.XX Aidan (still known as Bubbles).0 -
I think that any form of arthritis is a progressive disease. How fast, and how far it spreads, is an entirely individual matter. I started with one affected joint, now it's thirty-one. (I have PA). The drugs I dutifully inject and swallow are not a cure, as such, they are supposed to contain and manage the problem. I wish you well. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Hi, I have OA in quite a few of my joints. One of the things that helps, particularlly my hips are some exercises the physio gave me and gentle exercise at the gym, with medical trainers. That way you build up the muscles and take some of the strain off the joints. Swimmings supposed to be good, but my problem with that is I can't swim

Hi Magenta, My OA started in one of my thumbs then it went into the fingers and on to wrist, shoulders and very slightly in the knees.I can sympathise over the shoulder pain.Earlier this year my shoulder pain was so bad it kept me awake at night as I found it difficult to lie flat and the pain travelled down the arm to the elbow. The only thing that gave relief was a six week course of steroids. An x ray was taken and it showed I have 'spurs'on the shoulder bones, they rub together which cause some of the pain.Because I also have RA I find pain popping up in new places that hasn't been affected before. At the moment the MTX and Hydroxy seem to be working and the pain has been a lot easier the past three months. Hi Magenta
Worth checking with GP as it might be a frozen shoulder???

Hi Magenta,
I have OA, which started in my back and is now in my knees and hands. The GP said that this only happens with certain forms of OA - particularly hereditary types, which mine is. (My mum has it too.)
However, I started having problems with my shoulder/ elbow a few months ago, and assumed that the OA had spread, but the GP said not. He said that if you have a problem with one joint, you can hold yourself stiffly, or your posture can become uneven, without you noticing, because one part of you is in pain.
I think that the only way to find out is to ask your doctor to have a look. My GP also warned me not to ignore any pain or ache I develop, on the assumption that it's OA, as peole with OA are just as susceptible to other injuries and problems causing pain as those wihtout it. Sounds obvious, but I'm glad he said it as it's tempting to put everything down to the OA. A few weeks ago he gave me a cortisone injeciton in my elbow which has cured the pain there - it wasn't OA, but tennis elbow. (Though I don't play tennis) Had I continued to assume that it was OA, it would still have been hurting!
Probably best to make an appointment with the doc,

Hi Magenta
I've been having problems with my shoulders/arms for the past 3 years. I'm seeing the specialist in two weeks time. Mine seems to affect my arm and collar bone. I can't reach up or back without it aching. In hurts during the night too. I had to give up on the co-dydramol as it wasn't strong enough to deal with the pain. I take tramadol 3 a day and if pain is bad take paracetamol alongside.
OA startd in my knees, then in my fingers. I don't know if everyone else is like this. My MIL has had 2 new hips due to OA but doesn't have it anywhere else.
When I iron I put use a tubular bandage as it gives some support to my wrist. I don't know about you but by evening time I have to get OH to undo by bra as I can't manage it. I find lifting clothes over my head difficult too.
I put a pillow under my arm to keep it comfy at night.
With regards
Sharmaine

H all,
Thanks for all your replies. My shoulder is alright-not great. Trying to minimise any major movements using my right arm. It's now my jaw again-so much pain over the last couple of days. Think it was the MRI that triggered this episode. Oh well, just need to drink more red wine

Hi, I'm getting a lot of pain in my neck, shoulder and left arm. The consultant at the hospital thinks its coming from the ulner nerve, which is showing problems on the nerve condution test. I know how much the pain brings you down and tires you so I'd see someone and try and get something sorted. Love Sue0
