Hi all
Just returned from my physio assessment at the Hosp and thought I would just update you all. The pretty young physio wanted a detailed history examined me and then toddled off to look at the xray I had taken in Dec (of my lower back). She came back and said that the degeneration was severe, was surprised I was as mobile as I am and that there was no physio that they could offer! It has to be "Self Management", However because I had told her that I had felt some benefit from aqua robics classes in the past I am to be referred for their hydrotherapy sessions. I asked her if the pain that I have in my neck and shoulders was due to the same type of problem - she said probably but couldn't say for definate as there are no xrays to examine. She also said that my ankles were very very stiff ???? now problems I have with my knees and hips, wrist and fingers but wasn't aware of my ankles! hey ho something to look forward too with those then.

Cath

Well, firstly well done on the mobility aspect, that is good news as it shows you are coping pretty well (sometimes I think we get so lost in the ongoing nature of it all we lose sight of what we are managing), secondly I think the hydrotherapy is a good idea as that can really help OA, and thirdly, let's hope the ankles do not morph into something really horrid! I reckon the neck/shoulder pain could be resulting from just general tension in your body as you move, we all tend to hold ourselves rather awkwardly as a result of pain etc, so perhaps some form of regular massage could help that - I see a sports masseuse for that, she really digs in and un-knots things! Hi Cath

I reckon that is a compliment of sorts there somewhere? You are doing well to be mobile as you are.

The hydro wil be lovely I am sure it will help - who knows your aqua aerobics might have ben WHY you are so mobile now.

Often we are referred to the physio first so they will coimmunicate back to your referrer and let them know what they can't do for you and put the ball back in their court.

    Hope the ankles are ok.

    Love

    Toni xx

Thanks for the update. The hydrotherapy will work wonders. The heat will be good for you. I hate it when the doctors cannot give people answers i suppose they assess new symptoms and cant tell us until they are sure. I like to know what is happening to me. It is good your mobility is still good which is a credit to your own self management and keeping going. The weightlessness in water will help keep you more mobile also. hope you go on well joanne

Thanks for your support, I am not really sure what the physio meant when she was surprised I was as mobile as I was. By no means was I jumping up ad down with fitness and what she didn't know was that I had been up for 3 hours to take my meds and "come round"- Perhaps having sighted the xray she thought I should really be out on a stretcher! ... lol

I have to try to keep as mobile as I can - I live on my own with no family living near enough just to pop in. I am slow - very slow and in pain to some degree all the time. But there are days when I cant get out of bed let alone get out. However I am looking forward to the Hydotherapy but not sure how long the waiting list is.

I loved the hydrotherapy when I had it years ago, it was bliss, unfortunately it only lasted as long as I was in the pool, still, better than nothing, lol... I hope you enjoy it when you go..
I was also a bit of an oddity, was the only young bloke there, certainly the only one covered on tattoos, lol.....
Think all the oldies were a bit weary till they got to know me...

    Hi Tracy
No I don't think its a Jaccuzi if it is willI take a bottle of champers with me lol!
It is a small pool at the physio Dept of the hospital where you do gentle excercises, because you are in water its not as hard as doing them in a gym but still good for the muscles and joints and its warm!

Hi Tracie, Cath, if I remember right it is a pool of warm flowing water, really soothing on the joints, champagne is optional of course

Hi Caterina, congrats on having such a good range movement! No mean feat.

I have loved my hydro sessions in the past, just beware - you don't realise how hard you have worked until later. Try and plan for a lie down/rest/snooze afterwards. Hope it helps.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi Cath

Just wanted to call in and say snap. When my Consultant saw my hips x-rays many months ago and discovered I was living alone and still working part time he nearly fell off his chair. I was so flummoxed by his reaction I got him to check the x-rays were actually mine.
Anyway as others have also said, I found the hydrotherapy while it lasted absolute bliss and if only I could have 10 mins of that each morning to get me moving. Hope you do find it helps, but as Speedy says don't be tempted to overdo it and you will certainly need that snooze. Let us know how it goes.
    take care
    Chris
