Have the sedative!
it is such a scary sounding procedure and yet such an important one they can tell so much from them.
Good luck

Hi,
I've had several and I've taken the sedation every time. It's over pretty quickly but you have to stay in hospital for a bit afterwards. Just a couple of hours and they'll give you a cup of tea and something to eat. You'll have to have someone to collect you and be with you after the procedure.
Let us know when it is and we'll be there for pocket duties,

Hello PaddyW
As the others have said, if you have the sedation hopefully you will be fine. Both my husband and I have had endoscopies and both of us agreed that with the sedation you literally know nothing about it. I know it is a scary procedure but I would be far less worried if I had to have it again, knowing how effective the sedation was.
Really good luck with it.

Definitely have the sedation if you are offered it.
I had one last year without sedation & I can honestly say it was the most horrific experience of my life - worse than child birth. There is no way I would consider having it again without being sedated.
PS I had one years ago under sedation & it was completely fine - you feel nothing at all & are aware of nothing.
If you are having sedation...you have nothing to worry about at all. Take it from someone who has had it with & without!0 -
Hi PatW
Sorry I cant offer any help, but I just want to add my support and wish you well with it, hope it all goes well xxLove

Hi Paddy I've had a few endoscopy's over the last 18mnths , and I agree with everyone have the sedation and before you know it you will wake up and it would have been done. Hence I'm not going to go into the details of the procedure! Good luck hope they can sort it out for you and everything goes fine for you.0

I have had two endoscopies this year both with throat spray - I wish I'd had the sedation.
Hope it goes well for you.

Hi,
If you aren't offered the sedation ask for it. Its available in every hospital but you won't be given it if you don't have some-one with you to drive you home.
I think the idea is worse than the procedure.....but I've never had one although I've been with plenty of people who did.
Good luck.....May0 -
My daughter had one recently and was offered gas-and-air (Entonox). Unlike sedation, it wears off quickly (she had an exam the next day) and you don't need a stay in hospital as it's effects are almost instantaneous. It also doesn't require an anaesthetist present, as they use Entonox for first aid situations and childbirth, of course.
We felt the Entonox was a fabulous idea - apparently, it's a new idea in that hospital, for minor procedures. My daughter giggled a lot (its laughing gas), was very relaxed and although she reports the endoscopy as painful, she couldn't really remember it afterwards.
As I'm terrible with sedation (have a tendency to go psychotic! ), its definitely something I'd request if I were having a procedure like an endoscopy.
Do ask for it - the hospital may think its an odd idea, but for them its much cheaper and for you it means a faster recovery.
My daughter's test was clear and I hope yours will be too.0 -
Hi
I've had several and was never offered a sedative, didn't know at the time you could have one. I had the spray and wasn't even told how long I should keep it, the 1st one was awful as I'd held the spray too long. Second time I asked the nurse first what I should do and asked for a bit of extra spray. That one was easy and no pain so was the 1st the nurses fault for not talking me through it or mine ? Don't panic though just go with sedation if you feel that's best.0 -
Sorry I canot help with your thread but wanted to say hello to Vonski
and to say that she knows what she is talking about. As she says she has had a few endoscopies in her time.
If I have the offer of being sedated for anything in a hospital I always say, yes please. We are all different though.

I have had two done both with throat spray, first was fine second was horrible kept choking i suppose it could depend on who is doing the scope. If i ever need another i would certainly ask for sedation.Good Luck .0

Hey,Paddyw.
I had one done about a year ago and was the only one there that day who didnt have a sedation. I can honestly say i didnt mind it too much. I had a lovely nurse who held my hand throughout and it also meant no hanging about afterwards. However, reading most of the other posts, i seem to be in the minority.lol. You need to do what you feel you can cope with. Good luck with it whatever you do.
