"Methcation"-To drink or not to drink?

Off on holiday next week for a forthnight and am unsure what a safe amount of alcohol is on Methotrexate. After I first started taking it in Feb I had an elevated liver count when I stepped up a dose so took a break for 2 weeks and it went back to normal and it's been fine since. As my dose has recently increased I wonder if the same thing will happen again, and whether alcohol influences it that quickly? What I don't want is to come back have a test and find I've got to go back to the beginning again.
I've not drunk much at all since diagnosed but I do miss the thought of mohito's by the pool and a nice G&T before dinner. I want to feel normal again on holiday and not be defined by my RA..................any advice from those on Meth?

    Sorry although i am taking meth i do not drink a great deal anymore , not because i don't want too i love a good drink .I managed a bottle of bicardi breezer on sunday meth day was friday and felt ok .Sorry i have not been of much help .

    It's a tricky one because not everyone gets the same advice anyway. I think in the USA they tell meth patients not to drink at all. I don't remember anyone ever telling me anything. I have a glass of wine every night and more when with friends. I aim to avoid it on my meth day. Fortunately I seem to have inherited a good liver. My ALT levels are always very low and I never miss a blood test.

    The sensible thing is to ensure all is well before you start taking any alcohol. Given that you had a blip before and have since upped the meth, why not have a blood test now to determine the state of things before you go away? If all's well then drink sensibly while away. This will probably mean more than you would at home and less than you'd like. (It always means less than we'd like :roll:) Remember that spirits have more alcohol than beer or wine.

    Remember also that, if there is a problem, you're unlikely to notice anything amiss at all so how you feel is not a good yardstick.

    (Or just ask the rheumatology helpline for advice.)

    I am not on MTX (I laugh when people call it meth - to me that's methodone or methamphetamine :oops: )You can tell I have had an interesting life :wink:

    BUT when My Mum went onto warfarin she was so worried about drinking - they said to her she could drink, but only small amounts and regularly, rather than a huge binge (poor Mum :wink: she loved her whiskey!)

    I have no idea about MTX, but think I would ask whoever is responsible for your care to be safe.

    when i started mtx and infliximab i decided i wasnt going to drink at all as i used to like the odd rum and coke (by the bottle) :lol:
    i came to an understanding with my consultant that if i was going on holiday i would stop my mtx the week before so i could drink without worrying or counting how many i had had.
    so far for the last 7 years this has worked out fine and having bloods the week after i returned were as normal as they usually are.

    dont do this without the consent on your specialist though as it has to be recorded in your notes just in case there could be complications.
    also never forget to take your mtx credit card sized booklet with you while abroad and keep it in your wallet or purse.
