I started taking 10mg amitriptyline towards the end of last year and have now for the first time got gout in my little toe. The only different thing in my life has been the amitriptyline and was wondering if anybody else on the forum has experienced gout when taking this medication?

    Hi

I've been taking Amitrip for over four years with no gout, thank goodness.

I really don't know about gout but I found amitriptyline far to buzzy and the side effects too crazy.

    Hi Janet
I have been on the amy's for around 3 years..but I don't have gout..you go and see your GP if you have not already...I have noticed a few people mentioning gout on here, and sometimes I wounder if it can be arthritis of the big toe... :?

I've never taken amitrip but, if you're suggesting that it's actually causing the gout, I don't see how that could be possible. Gout is painful though so do knock it on its ugly head as soon as it crops up.

Thanks everyone for getting back to me. I was just wondering if it was the amitriptyline as there isn't anything else new in my diet that could have caused my uric acid to build up. Perhaps it's just another sign of aging!

Have you read what Arthritis Care has to say about gout, Janet? http://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/AboutArthritis/Conditions/Gout?gclid=CNSA9f-YqbUCFYXLtAodoE8A3w
If you scroll down, there are suggestions for how you can help it ie drink lots of water, avoid foods containing purines (they give a list), exercise and don't carry excess weight.

    I don't think it's a sign of ageing as it's an auto-immune disease.

    Hi
I've never been on amitriptyline but have had gout
The doc said it was part and parcel of the OA??
It was in my knee and lasted for a few months....disappeared and never came back.
What eased it for me was d**p fr**ze.
Normally for arthritis heat is my preferred choice but not this time.
