What myths were you told as a child?

A conversation at work yesterday made me wonder. I'd had a sneeze threaten and we said how difficult it was to drive and try and stop yourself sneezing as you automatically shut your eyes for a few seconds.

My colleague said when she was at school word went round that if you sneezed and didn't shut your eyes, your eyes would fall out! :!: New one to me - that.

I remember being told:
Not to pull faces if the wind was blowing as my face would stay that way.
Not to step on the cracks in the path or a monster would gobble me up.
I was aware at one age of the myth that a monster could be under the bed.
Those monsters must have been extremely hard working ones, the amount of times we were made aware of their existence.
Also, if we said that "so and so did this, so we did it too" we were asked "if they jumped off the cliff, would you follow?"
The usual tooth fairy myth of course, plus of course the lovely Father Christmas, who'd only give gifts if we'd been good and somehow he knew all year round if we'd been bad.
Oh, eating lots of carrots made you able to see in the dark.

What were you told? Do you think myths and tales change according to the area of the country you live in?

    Oh to many to remember,
Eating your crusts would make your hair curly,
That eating carrots would make you be able to see in the dark,
The tooth fairy & Santa one,
Watching too much tv would make you blind,

That the body changes every seven years. I woke up on my 14th birthday expecting the asthma and eczema to be gone. Needless to say . . . .

Never to go out with wet hair or I would get a cold.

There are others but what passes for my mind has gone blank! DD

Never sit on a cold floor or you will get piles. In my naivety I asked "piles of what?'

I think I've heard all of the ones you have kindly remembered. Ah - happy days when I were young ...

Not exactly a myth but, whenever I said "I can't", my Mum replied "Can't means won't." I hated it at the time but good preparation for a lifetime of RA

We used to get told this about the radiator. I later found out it was because the low-set radiator wasn't very well attached to the wall and my mum was worried that we'd pull it off if we sat on it. :D
