Right Knee

Hi All, after suffering with pain and discomfort in my right knee and after several keyhole arthroscopies to repair my damaged cartilage on the inside of the knee. I have been advised to have a partial knee replacement i was wondering if anybody here has experienced this type of procedure? To be honest after suffering for the past 6 years and slowly losing my mobility i am willing to undergo it but would like some feedback from other people has had this operation.

Thanks

Chris

Hi Im female, have arthritis in both knees been told I need knee replacement in both knees as theyre both bone on bone. Only had a problem with my right knee to begin with. When I was 50 I was told I was too young for a knee replacement & asked if I would consider physio. The specialist said if I had any problems to go back to see him. My problem was I had to go through my doctor, all he said was we'll try the medication route first, whether I liked it or not, im now 63 awaiting to see yet another specialist after seeing a rheumatologist who was the one that told me I have severe bone on bone arthritis. My legs are both now disfigured & I feel like a freek, ive lost confidence in myself, I feel as if my life has been ruined, ive lost out on being able to do things with my grandchildren while they were young. I'll never get those times back. & now with covid like a lot of other people im stuck in pain waiting yet again.

@Jenwren this sounds so unfair I am really sorry it's taken so long to get to the point of surgery and now you are having COVID slowing things down for you.

Just remember your Grandchildren love you for who you are and not what you can do with them. They will have many many happy wonderful memories of their Grandmother I am sure.

    Take care

    Hi Chris,

Like 'remingtonwildhunter ' I've had brilliant total knee replacements but I don't' recall many on here who have had partial ones. This is probably the best I could find on comparing the two. https://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletter_article/By_the_way_doctor_Should_I_get_a_partial_knee_replacement

Hi jenwren. I'm sorry that your knees are causing so much pain and anxiety. My husband is currently awaiting the coveted prize of getting on the surgeon's list for a new hip despite it being regarded as bone on bone a year ago. Covid has a lot to answer for.

    But...

...as someone who was diagnosed at 15 and was at my 'unreplaced joints' (I have RA all over) worst when my two sons were young, I can assure you life can be good with it. There is no need to miss out, only to re-think how to do things and what to do. I had great fun with my sons and now with my grandsons. Yes, there is pain but there is also lots of joy and lots of love. Go for it and have fun.

Hi Peter thanks for the support. I am 48 in February. Like you i do a manual job (engineer) which i love. The pain and stiffness has made me reassess the way i work. I paid for a private consultation with Professor Nick London in Harrogate, he was great he looked at my scans and X rays and explained that because the rest of my knee is still in relatively good order a partial replacement would make more sense and then in 10-15 years it is easier to put a full knee in. I researched his work and he does more Partial knees than any other Knee surgeon in the country and he came in the top ten orthopedic surgeons in the country chosen by his fellow surgeons. To be honest it was a relief to hear as the previous surgeon said the pain and crunching i was feeling was all in my head and was psychological. He even pointed it out on my Xray where i was bone on bone and yes he said you will be in pain especially when walking on level surfaces as this is when the knee joint is rubbing together. I asked him if my age was a concern he said that i was a bit young but he had done people in there 20`s and 30`s and was more concerned with my well being. Even though i saw him Privately he referred me immediately to Harrogate NHS trust where he also holds a clinic. That was back in July 2020. I saw him through the NHS in October and he stood by his assessment, he explained that he put me on the waiting list back in July and in his own words he said if it was his Knee this is what he would have done. Now it is just a waiting game i try to stay healthy and active and keep my weight down (70kg) and take the pain meds and continue to work. Thanks again for your support,

    Regards

    Chris
