Exhausted and exasperated

I have osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia (a lovely combination). I have had both knee joints replaced and my left shoulder too. I have “marked” OA in my feet and just had an injection in one. My back is painful whether I sit, lay down or move. I’ve found it almost unbearable when I swim. My hands and fingers are affected too. I have little grip and my fingers do not straighten. I have paid for physiotherapy and acupuncture too. My GP seems uninterested and has not made referrals. I paid for the last one. My physiotherapist was really worried about my back and suggested to my GP a scan before further exercise. The letter was ignored initially but an MRI scan is now set for mid January 2025. Almost 4 months after the physio request. I have also had cancer and having seen an early scan some 4 years ago which indicated spondyotic changes and severe narrowing at C6 and patchy bone marrow, incidentalhaemangiomata and chronic endplate changes (no convincing sinister features though). Oh and a sponylotic disc. At the time I was seeing a neurologist because I had suspected nerve damage. This too has now increased to dystonic tremors. My mental health has deteriorated and unless I have to I no longer go out and socialise.

Can someone possibly advise me what my GP should be doing if at all anything?

Hello @marianneswim and welcome to the online community,

It sounds like you are really going through a difficult time at the moment and the seeming disinterest of your GP must make things harder to bear. It might seem like a while to wait, but the MRI scan in January will hopefully be the start of some positive diagnoses and treatments. The results of your scan will be sent to your GP and you will be able to discuss the results with them. There’s a useful checklist on the VA website that I’m attaching below - it gives some ideas for how to deal with medical professionals.

I have sometimes found that taking someone with me as a support has helped me to be more confident when discussing my condition with rheumatologists, and if this is possible for you it might be worth considering:

I suggest you get a new GP by the sound of things.
