Osteoarthritis of the foot

Can anyone tell me if you have arthritis of the foot, and it swells, how do you get rid of the pain and the swelling?

    Hi @Fredd1e

    Firstly you need to see a gp to check if it could be arthritis or a sprain, hairline fracture or something else. have you knocked,kicked,twisted it lately.

    Ive had all of these and they all swell up roughly the same way and pain is pain so its difficult to advise on what it could be. is it puffy and if you press it does it make like an indent then return to normal shape.

    There are anti inflamatory creams that can help pain but i think the most decent ones like voltarol are on prescription only.

    Haven't sprained it or knocked it that I am aware of. It is puffy and if you press it, it does make like an indent then return to normal shape. I was on amlodipine which can make the feet swell, so this was then I first noticed it. Having come off that drug it went down quite considerably but not back to what it used to be. It is only the one foot.

    Totally agree with Mr DJ get it checked out @Fredd1e it might be something more serious.

    No it is still not better. Have had x-rays and seen two Podiatrists and both say it is arthritis, one private the other NHS and both seem to think that insoles in shoes is the best way forward. I don't they hurt, but what else can you do, can a foot specialist do any better?

    you could ask your gp to refer you to a orthotics dept at hospital. they make shoes,trainers,insoles. for 20 years ive bought hitec squash trainers from sports direct and give them to orthotics and they totally remove the sole and build it up to support my ankles as both are fused. using the trainer straight from the shop they give way within a couple of weeks but once worked on they last a good 2-3 years.

    I use ice packs / hot water bottles / ibuprofen gel / elevation.

    Does anyone know if a compression sock helps with arthritis of the foot. I am trying it at the moment and so far it seems to be helping with the pain.

    I have tried them over the years and find ok in the day but definitely do not suit me at night whilst trying to relax.

    Everyone different but worth a try!
